I have only been a chicken mom since March 1st. My pullets and one roo are 18 weeks old. I have 21 pullets with one rooster. He is a sweetheart toward me, he follows me, crows at me and has never been aggressive toward anyone im my family. He is down right terrible to the pullets! He grabs them by their heads and shakes them, rips out their feathers and kicks them. He is just a BIG MEANIE!!! All of the girls are afraid of him. Is there anything I can do??

Sorry, but there are tons of wonderful roos out there, often free or at least cheap. Around here, mean roos go to the freezer. The pullets deserve a better life than that. at any rate.

I dont think I could eat one of my chickens, they are like pets to me. It would be like eating my dog.

Yes, I could post an add, but I noticed that there are a lot of roosters needing new homes. I could try though. I was hoping someone could advise me on how to break him of this bad behavior.

I have grown rather fond of him, I just feel terrible for the girls.

I too have a mean roo....he is just wearing out and terrorizing my poor hens.....At first, I did not think I could butcher and eat one of my ''pet chickens''...but I am past that stage and will have no problem having him for Sunday Dinner.
I do have a couple of chickens out of my 25 that I do love dearly ...but my mean rooster will be the first to go !!

When you see him being mean - don't let him! Pick him up, and walk away from the offended hen. If you cannot pick him up, chase him around if you have to. Across the yard and have the hose - give him a squirt and scold him.

My young roos are not allowed to mount a hen if I am around. If one roo picks on another - I break up the fight, same with my hens.

Sometimes they need to learn manners.

Keep your boy.In many breeds boys mature earlyer and try to mate.Hens do not like it before they start laying. If you can separate the boy for few weeks and when girls start lay let him with them.He will be real gentleman. That's the story of my Black Leghorn roo-Billy.I wish you good luck.

I would probably put him in a pen for a few months, and maybe invest in another roo.
