Meat And Eggs

Good morning Folks, here is another New Egg question from Colorful Colorado. How do you protect yourself when selling eggs or meat. People are so sue happy, that if they get a little belly ache, they are going to sue you. Do you just take your chances? Insurance? Disclaimers?

I have really never worried over it as we practice safe handling here and have never had anyone complain about illness associated with our eggs.... Yet, but we sell to established customers for the most part and they are just regular folks that wouldn't think of getting the law involved over a belly ache.

Hey Gus,

You can't process meat for sale in CO unless you have lots of licenses, etc. so it's really not worth it (unless you want to be a large producer). You can grow them and butcher them for your own use, so long as the process isn't against local ordinance. I am in southern El Paso county, we are OK here, but I don't know what the rules are in PW. As the crow flies we're probably only about 20 miles away from each other. Eggs are a different story. I have a whole lot of files and docs on this. I can email them to you. Thank you all for the info. RE: Wsmith, I'm just south west of PW(not in the metro district) and I'm zoned agri, I have no rules at all to deal with. I have no birds yet, as I'm looking into every detail, and until I have 100% everything in place and tested, I'm not getting any chicks, it would not be fair to them. Once upon a time I was a big city boy, been here for 11 yrs., and I had to learn a ton the hard, expensive way. According to the CSU ext. service, I can sell eggs up to 250 doz a month, and I thought I could get rid of some meat to friends and family, without many rules. By this time next yr. I hope to have a little menagerie, chickens, rabbits and goats, all happy little free range critters. So any info anyone has to offer, I'm all ears!

You should be fine for eggs, and personal/family meat then.

You get yourself a farm liability insurance policy, which you are most likely to be required to have, anyway, if you want to sell at a farmer's market.

If you are out in the country and have livestock, you need a farm policy anyway. Some farm policies automatically extend product liability to any farm products that you sell. Check with your insurance agent.
