Meat bird development (Week 9) - 10 lbs 11oz! Done. Whew!

If you are going to try to raise these as pets you will have alot of trouble and some pretty miserable birds. These birds aren't bred for longetivity. They are bred for the greatest size in the shortest time possible. They will develop very serious leg problems and organ problems.

I am not raising them, these are chickens that have fallen off the slaughter trucks. Yes they do have problems but can be managed. They all go to the vet

Thanks so much for posting that!!! We just ordered our first batch of chicks (Cornish Roaster and Rocks) from MMH and will get them next month! I am so excited to see how quickly they progress. I think I will allow my 7 yr old the documentation on them as well. That would be a great learning expereince. I Just bought 23 day olds from TSC Monday and will have him start documenting them weekly and then will compare them to the cornish!

Thanks for such a great post and ideas!

I keep records of my birds. This year I got red broilers from Ideal. It is so interesting how fast they grow. Keeping records is a good idea. It will help you in the future to pick a breed that does the best for you in your on unique conditions.

I would dearly love to get a dozen of these chicks and raise them, but I cant find anyone anywhere to process them. I had them ordered, but then I canceled the order. I certainly don't want to be stuck with 8 week old birds in need of slaughtering and no one to do it.

Halo you can do it yourself. Honestly its not difficult, or complicated. If I can help you let me know.
