Meat eating RIR

I thought meat was good for hens...? ... Protein and the like, just not uncooked (or cooked IMO) chicken, or the brains of an animal.

I gave my flock the leftover lamb joint from easter and they devoured that thing.

There is an old farm that told me to stop on the side of the road and pick up dead animals and throw in the pen. He said the protein is great for them. I just cannot stand the smell so I have not done it.

My hens eat moles, mice, starlings, frogs, and worms.

I have some dead domestic (albino) mice that are bred for snake food for my pet corn snakes. Should I try the girls on one? They are frozen then I thaw them for the snakes....Is this a good idea for variety?
Please don't think I'm hijacking the thread, I just find this very interesting...

Like was said earlier, Chicken's are omnivores & happy to consume both meat & vegetables.

Don't worry about it, but also don't pass out in the coop, the authorities will have to use dental records to identify you.

I'll keep that in mind, lol.

a good general rule of thumb i like to keep in mind when feeding my hens meat of any kind.

if they couldn't naturally "hunt" for it, then it doesn't get thrown in their food pile. because i highly doubt you'll find a chicken stalking a steer thinking mmm, i'm having steak tonight. maybe a couple of million years ago when they had scales instead of feathers and were two stories high...

it just doesn't seem right to mess with the food chain like that.

Unless you set out rat and/or mouse poisons let her have them. The protein is good for her and the eggs. I cook meat for mine all the time and they get leftovers.

Two of my girls are known snake and mouse killers. One even kills bees and frogs.
