Meat/egg combo?

I recommend black Australorps. They are very friendly, docile, and hardy chickens that can thrive in virtually any climate. They are great layers of large, brown eggs (sometimes exceeding 300 per year) and hens will typically weigh 7-8 lbs., making them nice-sized meat birds. I have had many dual purpose breeds over the years in some pretty harsh climates and am convinced that the Black Australorps are the best dual purpose breed.

You can research the Black Australorp by clicking on the breeds icon at the top of the page.

I've been doing some research along the same lines. The black Australorps keep popping up as a good choice. They are in my top three when I get to start a dual purpose flock. Speckled Sussex is my next contender. They may be a little better suited to your climate too.
