What is the best breed of meat/egg combo chicken, that could survive in the cold wet west coast Canadian climate? Doesn't have to be rare or fancy looking, just a hardy chicken.

I recommend black Australorps. They are very friendly, docile, and hardy chickens that can thrive in virtually any climate. They are great layers of large, brown eggs (sometimes exceeding 300 per year) and hens will typically weigh 7-8 lbs., making them nice-sized meat birds. I have had many dual purpose breeds over the years in some pretty harsh climates and am convinced that the Black Australorps are the best dual purpose breed.
