Meat prices $$$$$

Iin my area (northern virginia) eggs go for $5.50 at the farmers' markets in the summer. One farmer I know usually sells out of 55 dozen eggs in the first half hour of the market. Chicken I'd similarly expensive - i'd have to confirm, but i think $5-6 per pound for pasture-raised, all natural chicken is fairly common. But this is a really expensive area.

I might add that the smallest dressed birds I had were 4.75 lbs biggest at 6.8 lbs I sold no birds under 12.00 most over 15.00 and people were putting in orders for the next butcher to get fresh, this year I have 170 already sold when I start butchering next week.

That is exactly why I started raising my own. My daughter and neighbour both have health problems and having everything homemade/ home grown has helped both tremendously. My neighbour even wants to help at butchering time so she can see how its done but I don't know how she will "do".

I guess I could let her pluck... I think the killing and gutting may be to much but who knows. She may suprise me, my kids did. They thought it was cool.

If you are feeding them 'certified organic' feed you can likely market them as organic. However if they are on pasture that is not certified that could change the equation. It's easiest to just let folks know exactly how they are raised. If you need a 'bumper sticker' version, you could explain they are 'non-certified' organic, pastured chickens.

As you can see, price has a lot to do with your local market. Here in VT, $5/lb is about the norm. $3.75/lb if pastured but not fed organic.
