Medal

The spirit medal is for members who help other members - this would be for those who rescue or sacrifice more than the rest of us for chickens.

BYC Spirit: These individuals best demonstrate ALL-AROUND outstanding service and commitment to the BYC members and community. While maybe not expert educators, they are trusted Educators nonetheless, as well as Friends to all. They are dedicated to the BYC Community as a whole, and strive to help promote, support and uphold its values and goals.
Good answer.

Yes, but, in posts the chicken welfare that they do is generally evident. Also, we their story when they are welcomed.
Evident by who?
The badge/medal award crew needs to be notified. That only happens if the people are nominated.

I would imagine that if the people reading the thread thought it was deserving of a medal, they could nominate them then.

I realize I tend to be a pessimist, but I would be a little wary about the possibility of new members joining for the purpose of making up a dramatic story for attention. (I have seen a few instances in the past.) But that is probably rare because I’m sure the majority of people who have rescued something and come here for help with it are genuine.

On the plus side, a lot of that kind of member are only here for that event in their life and do not continue on to remain active. Probably they don’t own poultry and have no other need to be here. But if they received a medal of honor for their rescue efforts, maybe that would be the positive reinforcement that could encourage them to come back.

I thought you were asking how we would know if they were participating in animal welfare…hence my answer.

As far as them being nominated, wouldn’t it happen the same way as every other medal?

Perhaps others reading this who welcome new members everyday can chime in. What I am seeing doing it is that these new members do have the chickens and join for the support and information needed. A few examples: the lady who joined when she adopted 4-hens that were rescued from a factory farm. The hens looked so bad and sad, beaks trimmed, really thin, feather loss, etc…she wanted help getting these hens back to good health. She sent pictures 5-weeks later when they touched grass for the first time in their lives. She posts and will have these chickens the rest of their lives. The lady who turned her sunroom into a home for geriatric and disabled chickens, she needed help and to be able to ask questions and is actively posting. There was a couple, and he joined. They saw two roosters walking around and took them home. These people will keep the chickens until they pass, and perhaps get more. There are also rooster sanctuary people who join.

Agree 💯. I've seen a few of the rescued or special needs threads. Maybe a "Chicken Superhero" medal (yeah, that's an oxymoron for sure haha).
I do like the hero part of your suggestion. While I don't qualify for a nomination for this medal, there are members that do. I was able to pick out and/or hatch my own chickens and make my own choices. People who rescue/save are taking in/on birds others discarded or abused. Can you imagine how sacrificing their lives are? Right now, I am dealing with a health issue with 1 out of 20 of my chickens. I expect it to not be a chronic issue, but, it is taking me an extra 2-hours a day to take care of her. This is only one chick, and this health issue will probably go away. However, some of these chicken/duck/bird keepers have 4+ special needs birds they are dealing with everyday and it won't go away any time soon. I really take my hat off to them.
