Hi! I'm new to the world of backyard chicken raising, and I am wondering if I should feed my chicks medicated starter feed or unmedicated starter feed? Currently, I am leaning to the side of medicated, but I would like a second opinion from experienced people. Thanks!!

It depends on your geographical area. I'm in northern New England, 30 miles from Canada. Cocci is not prevalent here in the cold north. I use unmedicated and when raising chicks have all my birds of any age on same feed.

Ask around locally if cocci is prevalent in your soil. It's in every soil but unless high concentrations I'd not bother with medicated.

Welcome! I would feed medicated chick starter (amprolium) because you really don't know about the coccidia or lack or it in your soil. It's cheap insurance to feed it, rather than finding out the hard way that you've got a problem where you live. I have fed chicks either way, and (so far!) haven't had issues here. It is a lot harder to actually treat a group of sick/ dying chicks, if you leave out the treated chick starter and needed it. Mary
