Medicated feed/layer feed

Two questions: My chicks are 12 1/2 weeks old. When their bag of medicated feed runs out I'm switching to layer pellets (probably a couple of weeks) Is this ok, or too soon? I read 12-18 weeks they can start laying. Second Question: How long do chicks need to be on layer feed before the eggs are safe to eat?

I have read you want layers off medicated 4 months before they lay eggs. In other words, it sounds like if they get medicated, it has to be discontinued after 4 weeks of age. I am not 100% certain, read the article some months ago.
