medicated feed

I was suprised when my 4 1/2 month old just layed her first egg. I was still feeding the girls start & grow, but I believe there was some medicated still in the bin. Would it still be save to eat the egg or should it be tossed? Not sure if Purina Medicated Start & Grow would taint the egg or not, Suggestions?

Don't always believe what large scale food manufactures tell you.

They are not going to say it may be harmful are they? It would damage their sales and profits.

I would just toss the one egg out - no big deal and then no need to worry.

If I didn't believe in the integrity of a company then I sure as heck would never buy their feed in the first place. Understanding how the cocci blocker works is key.

Use it or not, feed it or not, eat the eggs or not. One must make one's own choices. Since I've got no dog in this hunt, I'm not recommending anything here, except this. Do your own research. The data is out there, there are FAQ's on feed company websites, County Extension office data. State Universities publish lots of studies, etc. In the end, you make your own decisions.

Amprolium is merely a vitamin B blocker. The amount that would be passed into that one egg would be negligable. You would need to eat dozens of them in order for you to even need to think about taking one Vitamin B tablet. Enjoy your eggs and know that they are perfectly safe. Many, many people have had their hens lay their first eggs while still on medicated feed. If it were a problem, there would be many links on the internet warning about problems with eggs and medicated feed.

But, as Fred said, " in the end, you make your own decisions"...the rest of us can only offer advice.

If, it were a concern, the withdrawal period wouldn't be one egg, it would be at least 21 days for the medication to be out of the chicken's system. Most of your other chicken medications, Sulmet, Duramycin, Tylan 50..the list goes on, fall into this catagory. Even deworming medications are at least a 21 day withdrawal period after the last dose.
