Medicated vs unmedicated feed?

Aww they kinda do! I never really thought of that. I always thought most chickens kind of looked like chocobos ^_^

And I haven't played 13 yet. I will get around to to soon haha its just sitting around right now collecting dust.

When I first saw chocobos I thought they looked like chickens just flat-out. They remind me of Nausicaa's "horses" too.

I only got to play 13 at all because my roommate last semester worked for Hollywood Video and had free video and game rentals.

At 6weeks they have already been on Medicated for awhile. I'd put them on Flock Raiser at this point.

I usually feed chicks one bag of Medicated Starter. Once it's gone, they all go one Flock Raiser until the end of their lives.

Just an FYI--medicated chick feed does not have antibiotics in it, it has a thiamine inhibitor which slows down the growth of cocci giving the chick a chance to build up a natural immunity to it. I agree to only use antibiotics when you are certain you are not dealing with a virus or correct bacteria.

I am new to this stuff, but I feed mine organic feed non medicated and my hubby picked up food for me once and I didn't see it was medicated. I gave it to the chicks and for some reason they really started to stink after only a day or two, I then read the bag and realized it was medicated and I stop using it. Don't know what it was but the smell went away too. Any ideas?

Just a caution, SOME chick starter DOES include Amprol & Bacitracin, an antibiotic. Agway is one feed and I've seen several others. Pays to read the bag and not just assume that medicated feed is just Amprol.

Amprolium isn't harmful if you look at how it works

From Corids Website

How CORID works
Structurally, CORID mimics thiamin (Vitamin B1) which is required by coccidia for normal growth and reproduction. When coccidia ingest CORID, they experience thiamin deficiency and starve from malnutrition. CORID has been experimentally administered at many times the recommended dosage and duration with no signs of toxicity.

When CORID works
CORID stops coccidia at a critical stage in the host animal's small intestine to prevent more damaging coccidiosis in the large intestine. By acting on the young asexual stages of the coccidia life cycle, CORID allows exposure to first-generation schizonts, so the host animal can develop natural immunity to coccidia. This makes CORID effective as a preventive therapy.

So Amporlium is the same stuff that is in most chick starters (read your bag and check for other types or antibiotics), the main ingredient in Corid just a higher dosage, I didn't feed it to my babies until I researched it, everything came up the same as the website. There shouldn't be an immunity problem, but there are many different species of cocci (over 32 I think) so if they get reinfected that's why.
I'm still feeding my babies medicated feed and they're 2 months, my hens get into it though they're not supposed to and I eat their eggs still, I'm perfectly fine.

Yikes!! I've never seen one with anything but Amprol in it. Why would they put Bacitracin in it? Is it because some folks put too many chickens in a small area? I highly recommend reading any and all labels! Perhaps it depends on where you buy your feed too.
