medicated water vs medicated feed

Cocciodosis becomes a problem if feeders are allowed to empty or bedding is allowed to get wet.
Put waterer higher and replace bedding when wet. Keep feeders at least half full.

That is partially correct, however cocci can happen even if the bedding is bone dry, feeders full, water sparkling clean. I just don't want folks berating themselves when they see bloody poop when it's easily treated if caught early and does not necessarily mean their management is bad.

It was suggested to me to give sulmet before putting them outside for the first time by a local great breeder who says it is very common in the area. I will be calling the local feed store in the morning, but am wondering if I should really give it without signs. They are on medicated Blue Seal chick starter.
I am leaning towards giving it because the breeder is local and dealt with it many times.

Why give a sulfa drug that is very hard on them if they aren't sick? I wouldn't do that, personally. I think you'd be better off giving them a round of Corid (concentrated Amprolium) after they've been on the ground for a week, if you want to give something before you see any symptoms. Sulmet is just not something I'd give lightly.

Thank you, I am glad I asked (I was teetering back and forth) and was hoping you would respond. I am leary of giving anyone any drugs without needing them so I will wait. My chickies thank you
