I have a chicken with a poopy butt that I assume is vent gleet as I have de-wormed with valbazen and treated with Corid (just in case) I have given her yogurt and put acv in water, given her baths and trimmed butt feathers and no change. Going on 2 months and I’m so frustrated that I can’t seem to get cleared up. She lays and to my knowledge is otherwise is non-symptomatic. I was reading through some other posts about treating with Nystatin, but as I don’t have and avian vet near me, I don’t have a prescription. I can buy the Medistatin powder without a prescription I believe, but I can’t seem to find dosage for a chicken, only pigeons. Anyone else tried Medistatin for vent gleet? A) Did it work? And B) what dose did you use for how long? Also - egg withdrawal period!? TIA

Thank you so much! I don’t know why I couldn’t find that post earlier. It says do not mix with food but I’m assuming that is for treating crop and not vent gleet correct ?
Mixing it with food to treat intestinal yeast is probably fine. Note that it is not well absorbed, so it will only treat susceptible yeast that it touches, meaning some strains of yeast could be resistant and it will not treat yeast in the reproductive tract.

Hello, I just popped over, not sure on the nystatin (oddly enough I've been going round and round trying to get some for one of my hens for a fungal infection in her crop-) but what's worked for me with vent gleet is monistat. Yep, ladies' yeast infection cream. It works- but the delivery can be a little less than appealing. Grab some exam gloves, put a generous dollop on your finger and work it into her vent. yes, this is unpleasant. do it twice a day (morning and night) for 10 days. DO NOT SKIMP, I tried for a week and it came back.. definitely not something you want to treat longer than necessary. My hen recovered perfectly and bounces around fine now!
