Fun chicken pictures! I just realized you were also from Oregon, howdy neighbor!
Well "hey, there!!" !!! I see your avatar says cascade foothills...hmmmm. I live in La Pine, what's your locale?? Have you had chickens a long time...how many? Sorry, I'm always full of lots of questions!! Have a great day today!!

As the raven flies I am almost due west of you, on the wet side of the Cascades, near Sutherlin. Yesterday we were on the west side of Windigo Pass. I think the other side of it is near La Pine? Spent a beautiful but buggy day at Diamond Lake. Incredibly warm day!

I have had chickens for 5 years. 18 at present, a mix of Buff Brahma, Speckled Sussex, BO, BA, and a couple Easter Eggers. There are 2 accidental roos, EE and Buff Brahma, they earn their scratch watching for bald eagles that follow the fish runs up the creek.

How long have you had chickens and what kinds do you have?

Ah, yes...Sutherlin! You have quite a flock going there! I have 4 Black Australorp "teenage" chickies...hopefully all four are hens, but I have one that is suspect. Could be that she is just the "leader of the pack" and shows her dominance over the rest of them. Time will tell I guess. you never really know til they crow!! I used to have chickens many years ago, and now that old age has set in and I'm by myself I've decided to keep just a few for company and, of course, eggs! I envy you SO much living on the other side of the 'hill'...why? Because you guys have DIRT!! Over here we all fondly refer to ours as cat litter....can't grow hardly squat over here...sigh.

Well, I wish you all the best, and do keep in touch now and again...CYA!

The next time we get chicks I want to add more BAs to the flock. They have been my best layers. I also had an intensely dominant BA, Pink Toe. She ruled the roost until the accidental EE cockerel decided to take charge of the flock. There was one stretch she laid 120 eggs in 120 days. The only draw back I have had with the 2 remaining BAs, Blanche and Valerie, is that they are the last to stop laying and start molting in the fall. Should not be a problem right? More than once they have started molting December 21st during weeks of damp, foggy, 35 degree, miserable weather for bare exposed skin. Both have spent brief vacations in the spare bathroom while they grow out some feathers to stay warm.

Well, for Dirt, we actually have Mud, Clay Mud. It is in the yard, around the house and in the house, impossible to keep out of the house. Stuff does grow here, everything is intensely green right now. The challenge is staying slightly ahead of all the new growth, or at least weed whack paths through it. Watching the grass grow is not a figure of speech for nothing happening, day by day it is visibly growing. DH and friends are planning their spring fishing trip to the east side, sunshine and high desert air. It is a treat for us to dry out.

Quote: Oh, what I wouldn't give for "intense green" taking over....miss it immensely! Fishing? Here in La Pine we are literally surrounded by lakes and dams....hope they catch the "big one"!!!
