For three years we've wanted chickens. We tried hatching 3 years ago, that was a disaster. Then we put the idea on hold. But this year hubby was talked into building a coop and we picked out 6 chickies today! We're in love already! Wanna meet them? :D

This is Gwynevere, my dd's favorite. She is a RIR.

This is supposed to be an Ameraucana, we'll see. Because she's all kind of browns like coffee, her name is Flappuccina.

This is a Barred Plymouth Rock. We're still working on her name but part of it might be Mila (said 'Meela'). Named for Milo from The Phantom Tollbooth bk.

This is supposedly a Cinnamon Queen. And from the very start she was a little bit pecky. I was wanting to name one after Pippi Longstocking's name 'Pippilotta' so she became Peckalotta Pecorino. :)

This is a Black Australorp. She's so curious AND has black eyeliner so we've named her Georgia Cleopatra. ;)

This is another RIR. Her name is a combo of two things from the TV show Doctor Who. She is Ginger Song. She happens to coo little songs like a songbird.

Now you've met everybody, do you think the place we bought them from got the types right? I'll keep posting updated pics here. Thanks for visiting and sharing my joy!! :)

They're growing so much, getting long wings, thicker legs, learning to fly and forage. We take them out to the garden to walk around and get used to the outdoors. We've tried treats on them. So far they like cottage cheese, mealworms, oatmeal. Apples and flax seed are okay and some like the fermented mash. They have no interest in lettuce, peppers or watermelon. I mix grit in their food as well as put it in their new dust baths along with wood ash, dirt, sand and DE. They like their baths although some just like to sleep in it. Go figure. The coop is still being built and I've picked out a color for paint, Middleshire green, because it reminds us of the Hobbit. ;)

I got my order from Meyer's yesterday. My meal maker chick looks a lot like this one. I originally thought mine was a Cuckoo Marans, but now I'm wondering....

I'll have to try to get a decent picture.

Here is a picture of my meal maker. What do you all think? Barred Rock (those are black legs)?

I was told if they are black and have a white/yellow spot on the head they're a Barred Rock. We also have a black white with a white stripe horizontal across her head, she's a black Australorp. She's supposed to get chocolate brown but so far all the feathers growing in are all black so who knows...
