Well, ducks and chickens are flock animals. They will usually end up very sad without a flock. Sometimes they die of depression.

It is possible to keep lone birds. I've done it several times over the years with different species, not intentionally though. If given enough human companionship and attention, they can actually thrive. Not preferred, but they can still live happy lives!
