Melanistic and Mutant pheasants.. Pic heavy

New Melanistic blood from the NJ ZOO(Received 2 young cock birds and 2 young hens earlier in the year) they are turning into nice birds

Just a couple quick pics of some our 4-5+ year old pheasants and mutants(Male is 5+ his name is Wizard)

This girl is 4 years old and now she has gotten the green color in the neck very unusual & the first time Ive seen this in my cross hens after a molt

Beautiful birds.
Can you give me any ideas of what pheasants to get. I mainly want them to look at, I have several birds that are just for my own entertainment. But my DH will eat one one now and then. (maybe)
But mainly they will be in a big flight pen so I can see them out my kitchen window.

How are they size wise compared to ringnecks? And how long do they live? You have some 5+? I never looked to see how long they live.

For anybody starting out id go with ring necks, they aren't all that expensive and they lay lots of eggs during a breeding season which means you can eat them in addition to your chicken eggs. As for some ornamentals they don't lay as well as ring necks do. My mutant hens lay an egg a day and each day of the breeding season for the most part.

Plus if you or your family member like to eat pheasant they make a good food source as well. If ringnecks have the proper space most will even sit for you, about half of our hens are always willing to set on a nest if you give them the opportunity..

I know someone who has some ring neck pheasants and his oldest male just passed away this past spring ,he was 9 years old. I'm sure some may go longer..

The pure melanistic i believe will be a tad smaller then my bred X mutants..

"BeautifuL" Birds I had a Mutant Melanistic for most of the summer his name was Larry he was my pet.
I sold him to someone who breeds them as he became lonely and would call for a mate.
