(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I don’t currently have chickens due to my city ordinances. I’m in the process of asking for an ammendment to allow a small flock within city limits and have been reading a lot of threads on that forum. I’m hopeful but it could go either way. We plan to move in a year or two anyway to have more land and be able to have livestock. As far as housing them illegally, no bueno, the city building has a view of my entire yard. So I am new to chickens although I do help out a friend of mine whenever they go out of town and butcher.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
0, but if I can get it passed I’ll have the max I can! Chicken math and all.
(3) What breeds do you have?
None, but I have multiple interests. I plan to start with a mixed flock and see what I like. I made a mock cart online at a hatchery and found 15 breeds I would like to try.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Self sustainability, fresh eggs, and a humanely raised meat source. Plus I like animals and chickens can have wonderful personalities.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Reading, writing, and gardening. I’m sure there’s many more but I can’t think of any off the top of my head.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Married with a one year old and a Yorkie. I mostly stay at home but work as an RN a few days a month. My husband and I want to become as self sustainable as possible and love to learn new things.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I’ve been lurking on different threads and forums for about a month. I found it by googling a few things about chicken breeds and ordinances and it had a lot of useful information. I joined because the members seemed knowledgeable and very helpful.
