Oskyr-isadora Phenyx Rozy
In the Brooder
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My in-laws had a flock of about 15, so I am not completely new to chickens... but this is the first I have raised my own little flock (of three).
Oskyr.isadora (the reddish, smaller one) has been with me since March 7, 2018. Phenyx and Rozye (picked and named by my nephew and niece; spelling chosen by me) have been apart of the family since March 17, 2018.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Three.
(3) What breeds do you have?
No clue! I went to my favorite supply store for veggie seeds and ended up taking home eight chicks! After watching all the babies, and annoying (I am certain) the employee by requesting he move the "lame" and/or trampled chicks to an empty trough, he told me he would just give them to me... and oh, how I am a sucker for the underdogs of all animals!! And it just so happens that my house came with a workshop and attached, mini chicken coop/house/run! (I am still learning the terminology) I knew some of the chicks would not make it through the night, but wanted to give them the chance. I sat on the garage floor for over four hours doing what little I could as one by one I grieved the loss of six total. My heart was broken. The next day, all was fine with the remaining two until that afternoon when I noticed one was somewhat lethargic. She passed away later that evening. My heart broke again. The sole chick knew it was now alone and began "crying." So I picked out one of my cats' toys, a furry mouse, that was about the same size as the chick and it worked! Baby chick had a new best buddy! I took my nephew and niece with me to the supply store to pick out two chicks to join my lone chick. After hearing the sad story, the employee gave us the two new chicks. So compassionate those employees are!! (I do not know about other states, but I learned that Arkansas requires a minimum of seven chicks be purchased... but since I technically did not purchase them... well, that is the story of how I ended up with my three babies! (and the toy mouse is still required by my first chick, Oskyr.isadora! Too funny!)
I honestly did not even pay attention to which breeds they were (it did not matter to me - I just hoped to save some chicks)... and the store has had different varieties/breeds every time I have been there since. So, if anyone would like to take a guess - PLEASE DO!
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
While I was frantically searching the internet for help/any and every bit of knowledge about day-old chicks - advice and references from BackYardChickens.com and its' members were the most noticeably helpful. Eight weeks later, here I am still researching and learning all I can from BYC members (thank you!!)
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I do not recall... Besides, I do not have time for other hobbies - I have become an obsessed, paranoid chicken owner!! Ha! Okay... I have a 10'x4' raised veggie garden: bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, Tendergreen and Blue Lake green beans, cucumbers, spinach, and onions. I love to go fishing - I carry licenses for Arkansas and the White River tributaries in Missouri... which is mostly Table Rock Lake (where my parents live). I even keep my fishing gear/rods in my car JUST IN CASE a body of water calls my name as I am driving nearby. I do not eat fish, so I catch-and-release them all.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Nothing too exciting to share... I am a 30-something year old female who had my life together in my twenties (bought my own house, obtained my bachelors degree while working two jobs that I loved, travelled a lot - mostly to the Florida and Southern California beaches! - was healthy and in great shape, and loved every minute of my life!!). Now, I am a mess! I am recently single and still trying to recover the heartbreak (1.5 years is still considered "recent," yeah??), live in the same house I purchased in 2005 JUST before the housing market and economy crashed (thankfully, while/since/if I have to live in NWA, I am still in love with my special, little house!), after years of working several extremely stressful, dead end jobs, an autoimmune disorder was triggered - early and somewhat advanced for my age - RA - I was diagnosed five months ago so I am still trying to learn about and figure all that out (fun!), I have a pharmacy technician license but I have been unable to work for several months (thanks RA), uncertain how I will come up with the funds to survive beyond May, I still eat mostly healthy but I am NOT in shape like my twenties (it happens! I am working on it - very slowly), I have two adorable cats I adopted four years ago - Tybias Verbyl and kyzr dymbe sozaye - it is probably a good thing I did not have children... they would have the most oddly spelled names! And if you have not already picked up on it, I am not shy about my life and I am somewhat cynical - but it is usually meant in a "funny-haha" manner.
