We have had 6 chickens (3 RIR/3 Barred Rock) since April 1, 2013. We have almost one acre of land in the City of Memphis, and we have an open-air coop and used to have a big pen for them that we moved every other day. The first week of September, this year, however, I decided to let them free range. I was scared at first, afraid a hawk or something might get them, but so far, so good. We also have an English Shepherd who is supposed to be guarding the chickens, but he's not so good at that particular part of his job.

I have been searching and reading posts in backyardchickens.com since before I got my chickens and have found answers to all my questions here. I don't think there is a question that hasn't been asked in this forum. It's an amazing resource.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

So glad you have found so much help here on BYC! It is always a risk to free range and over time you may lose a few birds here and there. But it sure is nice to let them spend their days outside in a more natural environment. If you do start to lose too many birds, get them into a large sturdy run and supervise the free ranging.

Enjoy your flock and welcome to ours!
