Mereks positive bird. Meat inspection

Try asking this in the Meat section, and also in the illnesses section. I know for myself personally I would not want to eat the meat of a bird I knew to be sick, but I know nothing of Marek's. Good luck, I hope you get some answers. This seems important to me.

Hi and welcome to BYC. If in any doubt, I would not consider eating any bird. Chat with other BYC members nearby using the links in my signature, below (turn your phone to landscape to see them).

Make yourself at home and enjoy the forums.

Best wishes

Hi and welcome to BYC! We're glad you joined us! Marek's supposedly isn't transferable to humans, so you could eat a chicken with the disease. But me personally I haven't ever been able to eat a sick chicken, even if I know it's safe. :idunno

I wouldn’t eat it. Sick bird meat isn’t as good as a healthy birds meat.

I would’ve culled him and thrown his carcass into a fire since mareks is pretty contagious. Every sick chicken I’ve ever had has been put into a fire and it’s been for less stuff than Mareks.

I wouldn’t chance it.

What did you do with it’s feathers and such? I’d burn it all. I would never risk any environment animals or animals on my property with the chance of getting Mareks.
