Messy chicks

My chickens emptied their pvc pipe feeder on the ground in 3 days. Can I just throw a handful of feed out there, once a day? I have 3 chickens.

They'll need way more than a handful of feed each day.

I prefer a feeder that they can't scoop out so feed isn't wasted. I've seen many references to 1/4 lb feed per chicken per day.

Edit: I didn't notice chicks in the title. Feed amount is for adults.

Better to find a feeder they can't get their little feet in to scratch feed everywhere. I have one I hang up once they're big enough so it is closer to beak level and that helps save on the feed bill.
