Messy Vent??

I just gave one of my hens her first 'butt' bath. It went very well. I did it outside because it is 85 degrees today. I added a few drops of baby shampoo to warm water, lured her with oatmeal (which she loves), picked her up and placed her lower half into the water. She sat very still after her first startled reaction. I let her soak several minutes, gently swishing water around her vent and dirty feathers. Took her out and dipped her into clean, tepid water to rinse and wrapped her in a towel for awhile. Then let her go. Still have to deal with what is causing the dirty vent and lethargy. Can't see any lice or mites but she has been shaking her head occasionally, so I may need to get Sevin and treat for that.

nice work! if it were cold out, you can also use your blow-dryer (I put the diffuser attachment on) to dry their feathers before returning them outside. I alternate between hot and cold settings on the dryer, too long on hot can burn the skin. I use my free hand to preen each feather, pulling it from root to tip and squeezing the water out while blow drying. afterwards, you have a very stylish hen!

This thread was just what I was looking for. One of hens had poop build up under her vent and I wasn't sure how to get it off. I tried cutting it but it made me nervous. I will bathe her bum tomorrow. Would coating it with vaseline help?

I personally would avoid oil or Vaseline. I once used olive oil and it got messy, got caked in mud & dirt, looked awful & I had to bathe her again in washing detergent to get rid of it.

I have one Rhode Island Red that has to be washed once a week.
She seems to be getting weak, and her comb is pale. Any ideas?

When I first got on here and read about bathing chickens, and barnyard chickens not show chickens at that, I thought, "These folks are just plumb crazy.". Then my cochin Coochie got a messy bottom and then a couple more fo the really fluffy bottomed girls got messy. So I brought them in, one at a time, and like someone else said, put a towel in the bottom of the kitchen sink, put on my rubber gloves and drew some warm water into the sink and started bathing. To my shock and delight, they LOVED the warm water and attention. I've never had to have someone hold them down, they get in that warm water and hunker down and practically fall asleep. I let the water loosen up the poo, then I wash them with soap and by the time I'm done with that any leftover stuck on poo is pretty loose and I can remove it with my fingers without pulling too hard (remember the rubber gloves!). After rinsing them thoroughly, I wrap each chicken in a fluffy towel and we go have some cuddle time while the towel soaks up the excess water. Once they've been wrapped up a bit, then I finish them off with the hairdryer. I thought the hairdryer would FREAK them out but they actually like the warm air blowing on them, again they relax so much until they practically fall asleep again. I skip the drying step in the summer but fall/winter, they LOVE it.
