Metal Detecting, Gold Panning, Geo-Caching,, who?

well in about 2 weeks I'll be back there abouts. I have to pick up a large van/small bus from Waxahachie Texas and drive it back to Michigan. I told everyone at home that I'll probably make a quick detour... (30 minute detour isn't all that bad is it?)

Writer, not sure how far it is from you but it is something you will remember your whole life.

I'd love to pan for gold, but from what I've seen in Texas, Arkansas and NM you have to get "Mineral rights" to pan a certain area to be legit? I want to try that someday so I will be lurking and reading this thread with enthusiasm.

There are a lot of areas you can pan without owning mineral rights or anything. Another thing you could do is take out a membership in GPAA, (NOT AN ADVERTISEMENT), and for that membership fee you get a guide and access to all the GPAA claims anywhere in the US and several in Canada. I say that is not an ad, it's not, it's a suggestion if you are worried about finding an area to go prospecting in and are worried about the laws. This way you are covered and have a guide with GPS directions to take you to most claims.

I used to metal detect all the time til my knees and hands got too stiff to do it !! I found all sorts of jewelry and old coins. Took all my grandkids to enjoy it with me back then, too.
I would find old homes that were abandoned and ask permission to hunt . I seldom had anyone tell me no.
Reading this thread has gotten me thinking maybe I ought to fire up the old detector
( Whites ) , grab a couple of grandkids to do the digging for me, and give it another try!!!

Yes you should!! What a wonderful way to spend time with the grandkids, the kids, anyone. And you have great places in that area they could learn a lot about too.

The first ever vacation I took my kids on included a day at Crater of Diamonds State Park. This was in 1986 and it is something they still remember fondly. Just the other day, DS #2 was saying he'd be glad when his kids would be old enough to enjoy a vacation trip there (at 5 & 2 they'll need a few years yet!) He wants to spend a week hunting diamonds.

I'd love to visit all those areas we don't have here to find gems and such. We have Thunder Eggs and lots of Pyrite though lol.

We live in the woods and at one point it was a strategic point to the army back then. Where our house stands now was a stagecoach point and then a house afterwards. When we started building our house on top of all the dirt we found old handmade nails. belt buckles ,all from the civil war.. Its so much fun to dig stuff up and wash it clean to see what it is.

I am a die hard Whites detector fan tho.. maybe thats why I am partial to it. Its worth it.

Oooh oooh! I really want a metal dectector! Every time we go camping at the beach, I ache for one!

We spent last Labor Day weekend down at the beach in Capitola and the beach was LOADED with people ALL DAY! Our hotel room overlooked the beach and when all the people were gone I SO wished for one! So many treasures I'm sure of it!!!

We have several metal detectors with various heads depending on what we are looking for. I scuba dive and have looked for gold in the American river with scuba gear, you find great sized nuggets in the deeper pools fairly regularly. My father pans as often as he can and we have buckets of black sand, the so called "pay dirt" ready to be processed. I am not an avid metal detector user or gold panner but I love being out with my father. I spend so much time in Florida that I call it home even though I live in the hills above Placerville CA, but while there I dive several historical sites where artifacts are still found and when I get the chance I dive the river mouths for fossils such as sharks teeth and mammoth molars.
