Hi, we are very new to chickens, as in, our chicks aren't even being shipped until June 1st. We are going to convert a metal shed that is 8x10 into a 5x7 coop and storage area. The run will be attached and be between 60 and 70 sq. ft. The coop and run are close to the house and deck and does get shade. We ordered 6 chicks and after researching think that is going to be enough space for them. My question is this.... Is the metal shed going to be too hot for them in the summer. We are putting ventilation across the top on 3 sides and one of the sides is going to be mostly wire with a half wall. I'm just concerned about July and August. I was careful to order heat hardy chicks. We live in northwest Georgia and summers get very hot.

Thanks,
Amy

This is mine and it still does get hot in there but I will be adding a fan for the summer months

I use a rubbermaid shed as a coop, I like it. But I'm in a very different climate. A metal shed can get hot so you will need to be very careful with ventilation, placement, and shade. Sounds like you've already thought of that and are taking steps. Your plan sounds good to me. Last summer we had record heat here in Seattle, got up to 103*F.(I know nothing by your standards) My chickens didn't even react. They are tougher than you'd think. Also some people use misters to help cool them off.

Thanks for your replies. I think they'll be ok since we have the shed next to our house and deck. I think adding a fan is great idea to circulate the air out.

Thanks again,
Amy

Yeahit would get hot but if they have shade they'll be ok. My chickens were running around last summer in 109*F. also I tried putting a fan on them but they wouldn't go near it.
