My name is Amber. My 15 year old son wanted to raise chickens for eggs. In October, we purchased 9 chicks (3 each of Buff Orpingtons, Golden Comets, and Barred Plymouth Rocks). In addition, the hatchery sent us an extra Buff and Barred. The BPR died within hours of receipt, and the BO a couple of days later. This left us with the original 9 we'd ordered. Another of our BPO seems to have some form of dwarfism. We are devastated because she is so sweet, and we've become quite attached to her due to the fact that at 7 weeks she is still in the house with us since the other girls chase and peck at her mercilessly. This is our first go with chickens, and though it has been bittersweet so far, we are happy to be doing it.

there is no getting away from the ways of nature when it comes to chicks, not all of them survive, but rest assured, they have a much better chance of survival and a good life under our care than in the jungle from which they originated, where the majority became land plankton for the larger critters. glad to hear you have some healthy ones and as for the runt, sometimes they make the sweetest pets.

Welcome to BYC! :frow I had a little "dwarf" chicken myself a few years ago. They are very easy to get attached to! Mine was an absolute joy to have around. I have found that boosting their diets with greens, vitamins+ minerals and extra protein (cooked eggs, mealworms and other bugs are great treats) can help correct that and give the little one a growth boost.

Hi Amber, thanks for joining us!

I had a Speckled Sussex that was smaller than the rest of the flock for the longest time. We named her Peanut for obvious reasons. The others gave her a bad time but eventually she got almost as large as the others, it just took her longer to grow.

Keep an eye on your little one and give her time to catch up.

Best wishes!
