Should the oyster shells be mixed in their food, tossed on the ground each day like a treat or making it pure free choice keeping a container full in the pen at all times?

Also, with the apc vinegar added to the water for laying hens, would that be a good thing to always do or is it reserved as a medicinal remedy for certain things and shouldn't be part of their regular diet?

I have a separate 18" feeder filled with 1/2 a 10# bag of oyster shell and I spread the other half on the pasture- same as their grit. I generally use acv for chicks and for the larger hens, acv on the weekends during winter.

I just toss a handful out on the ground when I think of it or have shell problems.

I have the oyster shell and grit in one of those galvanized long pans (looks like a footlong hotdog holder) for the chickens to "free choice" when needed. When it rains the grit and shell stays in place and does'nt wash away. It just seems to be working well for us and the girls know where it is. It seems that there would be a lot of waste if just pitching it out on the ground.
