Meyer Hatchers now selling BC Marans and Penedesencas

Hi, this is my first post on this forum! I just wanted to say what a great resource this has been in the planning stages. I am on a cuple of different online forums and am constantly surporised at the level of support and kindness here!

I picked up my first chicks from Meyer on March 22, and have a BCM female and a male (hopefully). I didn't know that they were new to the hatchery, I wanted dark colored chickens and thought the BCM roosters looked to have that "classic" rooster look to them.

I don't know if it would help this discussion or not, but I can post some pics of them if anyone would be interested They are starting to feather out nicely and are very lively.

:)Thanks, Laura

Anyone know how much the assorted rare marans are in the Meyer catalogue?
They are not up on the website... They are listed at MPC for $6 each, which uses Meyer...

I believe its $5.88 but im guessing theyre pretty darn close to being sold out for the season. But you could call and ask them.

When I called Meyer back at the beginning of February most of the marans and penes were sold out until September, so I would expect they'd be sold out for the year. The cuckoo marans weren't selling out as quickly, but I would expect they're just about booked up as well. You could always call and check though.

Do call and check. The reason they didn't have them is b/c their hens weren't laying. I'd keep checking.

I thought it was Meyer that uses MPC. I was told directly from Traci Torres that MPC owns their breeding stock. Seems to me more believable that Meyers (and all their wide range of breeds and species) dropships. Just saying.

Meyer doesn't drop ship their chicks (they do their waterfowl). I drive to Meyer and pick up my chicks every time I order from them (was just there today).

Meyer buys their eggs from Breeders of certain breeds withing a 50-100 mile radius (I asked), but they do own a lot of their own flocks.

Right. I have a habit of assuming everyone can read minds. Dropship chicks/buy eggs. Either way, I was told by Traci Torres that MPC owns all their breeding stock. They don't buy eggs (with the exception of their "hatching eggs" page which IS dropshipped) or dropship birds. Like I said... it is just what I was told. I can tell you that I have got the same breed (Dels) from both Meyer and MPC and they were VERY VERY different quality. (MPC being MUCH better) The Meyers Dels were very obviously columbian wyandotte influenced and were good as pet quality, but not to show.

I was enabled.. I ordered.
Has anyone ordered "rare marans" fm meyers? what did you get?
They had 3 "rare marans" available and I got 11 wellies ans 11 cuckoo marans. They should arrive in 2 weeks.
If anyone has picks or marans or wellies fm Meyer I'd love to see..

Wow. I'm slow on the reply... but yes, I got good hatches from the bantam barnevelders from MPC/Gabbard (same difference) HOWEVER, I did not get a good hatch from the Penes from Gabbard. I did get a good hatch from the NH from Gabbard too.

And, yes, I still say that Meyers gets their eggs from Julie Gabbard. She most likely sells them at a huge discount to them, but if you don't consistantly sell your eggs (which some of her auctions never get bid on)... you are right... a contract with a hatchery would seem like a good deal. I can only imagine her property and set up!

The hatching eggs on MPC that are Gabbards are the same price both places. AND MPC doesn't ship them... so I'd say MPC just get's a "finders fee" for the sale. Gabbard sells the eggs, gets most of what they wanted for them, MPC gets another customer and a few bucks sent their way. That is what you call a "win, win".
