Meyer Hatchers now selling BC Marans and Penedesencas

I doubt they came from Gabbard. Meyers wouldn't pay anything near $60.00 / dozen. How much are the chicks? That should show how much they paid for a dozen. My Pet Chicken sells those eggs for like $50.00 a dozen.... no way a big hatchery would pay that for hatching eggs. They demand the price not the breeders.

$5.88 st run
$6.20 pullets
$5.60 cockerels

That's for rare marans (BCM included), barnevelders and penedesencas.

Now I don't have an opinion on whether Meyer is being truthful, you just asked the chick price.

They would make around $50.00 to $60.00 / dozen eggs. Say 9 to 10 hatched which is normal for their incubators as they are the best...

I would say they are paying $2.00-$2.50 an egg at most which would be $24.00-$30.000 / dozen.

I guess if Gabbard gave them a huge discount form their normal prices, than I would say yes. But I doubt that's the case. I mean if eggs are worth $60.00 / dozen why sell them cheaper? Unless of course you couldn't sell them... then Meyers would look like a good deal because I'm sure they would buy everything that Gabbard could produce at $24.00 / dozen.

I don't think they actually need to "have" the birds themselves. I think they just purchase eggs from the people who do have the birds.

They are a farm. I do believe they have the hens there. I live down the road and pick my chicks up. When I went to palace my order for my marans and blue laced red wyandotte. They cant give ship date yet, due to the hens arent laying yet. That sounds like they are there yes. I will gladly wait. We are also throwing around getting a couple Penedesenca hens.

they are comming from Gabbard Farms. I know my hatching eggs from mypetchicken ended up being Gabbard. Wonder if mypetchicken realizes that they mark the box. Seems they wouldn't want people to be able to get a second order straight from the breeder (like I did)

Did you have a good hatch with Gabbard farms?

The Black Copper Marans are indeed from Gabbard Farms.

Meyer hatchery purchased eggs to hatch for themselves to start their own flock of Black Copper Marans. They are not buying BC hatching eggs from Gabbard to hatch out to sell. They hatched out and started their own flock of BC's from eggs purchased through Gabbard Farms.

They only have a small flock of the BC's, which is why they have a limit of 15 chicks per customer. I was able to get my order in early, and will be picking up my BC chicks on March 30.

They were not able to tell me what line their BLR Wyandotte's were from, and they were quite honest with me and said the BLR are a really new breed to them, and they do not know much about the BLR's. I spent a great deal of time talking with them about what the proper coloring for a BLRW should be, and we discussed the whole black/blue/splash and type. They have a very small flock of these as well, and the limit of chicks per customer is 10, but their BLRW's aren't even laying as (per my conversation with them yesterday).

I've been calling at least once a week checking on BLRW availability.

All of the Black Copper's are sold out until mid-summer, and some of the other Marans, as well, but Cuckoo Marans are still quite available!

(and I might add a couple of these to my order, because my two cuckoo marans from them last year lay a pretty milk chocolate colored egg....not the darkest Maran egg I've ever seen, but I feel it's good for a hatchery bird!)

ETA: All of the breeds Meyer offers are small flocks in a local area to them. The Meyer employees start at 5 am every morning, and drive to each farm where their breeds are, and collect eggs. This is in a 50 mile radius of the hatchery. They have different breeders raising and collecting the eggs for each breed so that all of their breeds are not housed on the same farm. This is extra bio-security, so that if one flock of something should get ill, the rest of their flocks aren't exposed.

That is what I have heard also. My Cuckoo Marans laid nice milk choclate eggs quite nice for hatchery stock and the faverolles from them were also decent quality.

I just purchased Partridge Penedesenca chicks from Meyer's, the first Hatch Date, I ordered 6 and got 5 from the eggs they hatched. I asked about the birds, they told me none of the birds are there, they purchase eggs in a 750 mile radius, and more than likely mine were from Amish. The only birds that are there are the Owners Own Personal Flock was what I was told, if I saw any birds in the yard, which I didn't see any.

Meyers has a very nice Store, I was impressed with what they did carry for birds. It was like a Tractor Supply Store with Chicken Items Only.
