Meyer Hatchery Black Copper Marans, how light or dark did your hens eggs end up being?

I ordered a Black Copper Marans from Meyer Hatchery in the hopes of having a beautiful basket full of multi colored eggs. I have a light brown layer, a medium brown layer, a ((hopefully)) dark brown layer, a blue layer and a green layer. I'm ok if the marans eggs are not DARK DARK brown, but I would like them to noticeably darker. What has your experience been with this hatcheries Marans eggs?

Dahlia, my 5 week old....

I searched all over the web for that info and did not find any recent posts about Meyer's stock (most were 2010-2011). I am in the same boat and waiting on our bunch (Black Copper, Blue Splash, Golden Cuckoo, Silver Cuckoo). I guess we wont know until the fall :)

My Black Copper Marans from Meyer lays a lovely dark egg, just what I was hoping for when I ordered her. They are probably not as dark as the top quality Marans eggs, but dark enough that pencil markings can be difficult to see on them. :) Not a great picture, but here are a couple of her eggs. The one on the left was a one-time occurrence when she first started laying, and the one on the right is typical of what she's laid since.

My Splash Marans, also from Meyer, lays a basic brown egg, no darker than any of my other brown eggers' eggs. She is a bit 'different', if you know what I mean, so I'm not sure if that's typical of them or not. She's the only Splash Marans I got from them.

Those are the only two Marans I have, but I hope that helps you both a bit, anyway. :)

Beautiful!!!! Just what I wanted to hear! Thank you!!

Wow, those are nice. Thanks for taking the time to post. I wanted the black copper and our kids wanted different color chickens, so we went with a mix of Marans. Hoping we get a mix of nice brown eggs this fall; regular brown works, but hope we get a couple darker ones like you posted.

I just noticed this thread when looking at Pipd's photos. I had a BCM hen from Meyer named Morgaine. We unfortunately had to put her down a week after her one year birthday in April. She wasn't walking, eating, drinking, she had lost a lot of weight, her skin was yellow and her abdomen was sore. The vet said her only chance of surviving the weekend was staying the animal hospital with an iv and we just couldn't justify the cost and her continued suffering. We think it was reproductive issues, she didn't lay all winter or start up again in the spring. But she gave us a month's worth of beautiful eggs in November. She laid her first egg on Halloween at 28 weeks old.

Her first egg unwashed with a strong bloom and washed, her ink jets weren't firing well yet.

The next week looking better Her's is the small brown one front and center and to the left is our Golden Buff (sex-link) Amelia's egg

I love how they looked with the pastel eggs: EE, BCM, Buff Orp and Dorking eggs. They sometimes had a purplish cast to them.

I love this pic. The contrast between Amelia and Morgaine's eggs reminds me of chocolate and caramel

This is pretty close to her true color, I have a pic like this that is darker and one that is lighter.

Dahlia is a very pretty little pullet, I hope she lives a long happy life and lays beautiful eggs for you.

Thanks for your reply, cute hen and I love your egg photos....that's what I'm going for. A rainbow egg basket. I'm sorry for your loss. Losing a hen for any reason is rough.
