My one RIR is so mean to me sneaking up on me and biting me and now my Cochin is pecking me hard too. This is a new thing so maybe it's boredom. My RIR may be given away, she's mean to the other girls too, but my cochin is so cute I'll just have to put up with it I guess. But with all my layers of clothes on when I go out there it doesn't hurt to much but come spring/summer it's gonna hurt!!
I thought that that first picture looked a lot like my meal maker as a chick too!Oh it has been a long day. Just realized that chick pic was my meal maker NOT my brahma.

My White Rock Daisy is a little nicer lately since she hates snow. The others go out in it but she stays in and is acting different. She'll probably be back to her old mean self once the snow is gone. Everyone who goes out to visit with the chickens is always asking about that mean white chicken that keeps pecking them. She is better to me, but when the weather is normal she's abusing the younger ones.Oh no! Hopefully it's just boredom and she will quit when the weather breaks (hopefully mine too). I know what you mean it hurts bad! My buff definitely gives a good stink eye though! Lol it's so funny! I have to try and take a picture of her doing it!

I've got a new issue with a rooster. My son and I, usually me, muck a few stalls,feed/water the horses, ponies and sheep and take care of 2 roosters almost every day. There is one bantam roo and one very large barnyard mix roo in a 4X4 coop and a small run. Since there's so much snow they don't come out at all and I think they're bored. The little guy is harmless but the big one has taken to coming at me when I change the water and feed him. As soon as I open the coop door he comes right at me. He drew blood on my hand today! I can't grab him cause it's only a 4X4 coop and maybe 4' tall so I don't go in, just open the door and reach in. Any ideas? He attacked me 3X about 1 1/2 years ago but he was free ranging then and that was at another location and I just never went back there because I wasn't working for them then. I guess I can have a stick or something to push him back but the doorway is so small I'm not sure how it will work. Any ideas are welcome.I thought that that first picture looked a lot like my meal maker as a chick too!![]()

We keep talking about if we are going to raise chickens for food too and everyone keeps saying that Daisy will be the first one we practice on. She does lay a large egg almost everyday though, so that's what's keeping her around.![]()
I've only had grocery store chicken and would love to try fresh but the plucking the feathers is the part that I think will bother me. But maybe one day.I have been talking about raising chickens for food too (even though I'm yet to get an egg!!!). Having these chickens has brought out the homesteader in me.
My family wants to eat my chickens, but no one wants to do the deed. Now I have been a vegetarian for almost 15 years and I feel like raising the chicken makes me feel like I could eat it, but there's no way I'm killing a chicken. Especially not one of my favorites. It would be nice to have meat that you know was raised properly. I kinda think I'd have to end up with a mean one or the instance of too many boys. Perhaps a situation like that could break the ice.
Very niceHello, everyone! My little Meyer girls (and boy) turned 9 months old on Wednesday, but I've been so busy that I totally forgot! So here are their pictures today, 9 months and 2 days old.![]()

Just don't pluck him in the house! The wet feather smell combined with no air flow in the house can seriously lead to...
Exactly... that's the part that would gross me out. Wet feathers and bad smell. I'll be so grossed out I won't even eat the dang chicken. Maybe I need to find a processing place. Although by the time I do that it's like paying $7/lb for chicken!!Just don't pluck him in the house! The wet feather smell combined with no air flow in the house can seriously lead to...![]()
Believe me I would in a heartbeat but he's not mine. The woman we work for rescued him and she has the biggest heart and won't do it. Even when she let him free range no predator would touch him. A fox killed 1/2 the flock including another rooster but not him. I put on a thick glove today and just threw food in the coop real quick and didn't need to change the water so it was OK.
She's in the process of building a beautiful coop/run for the roosters and getting 8 pullets but then it will be even more scary cause then I'll have to go in the run with him. But at least I have room to grab him by the legs and hold him upside down or smack him away with a shovelI won't put up with it then. AND if he gets real bad I just won't go in there. It's just the coop is so small and when I reach in the to grab the waterer he charges me and bites me.![]()
