Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Well we didn't get the 10 acre house. They went into contract over the weekend. It was a risk we took but we just weren't ready to make an offer yet. Too many other things in play until now. I'm a little disappointed but it wasn't our perfect dream house or land so I think it's for the best. It also means we can take our time on our current house and do the things we want to do to it before putting it on the market. Which means less stress for everyone, especially DH who was stuck with a lot of the work since I'll be out of town the majority of these two weeks. We have another possibility, I like the house and the views and it has a great coop already, but there are no trees on the property, it's on a slope, and only 5 acres. Much more usable acres though. I think we're just going to focus on getting our house ready and keeping an eye on the market for now.

Sounds like a good plan! You'll find the right property when you are ready!

LOL, so cute!

It's always good to not have to rush. And with a little more time the exact right place may pop up.

Uh oh... I don't know how it happened, but Meyer just received an email from my account asking to add an EE to my order. Hmmm...I guess I'll be getting an EE, a lavender orp, a lt brahma, black copper marans.

hehe

That's true. I checked on then when I got home and both looked good. I gave then some water. Mother hen also was teaching her baby to eat. Here's a pic of the chicken tractor I put over the best box which is just a peck n play from murray mcmurray

I love seeing pics of the mama's and babies. They are cute. Love the peck and play!

That is awesome that you have 2 people that will take the RIR. I can't wait to hear how your flock does without her around. We have a new leader in our coop now, Olivia our EE puts the younger 16 in their place. I noticed that she would break up fights and tried to control Daisy, but now you can tell that she is the one in charge. It used to be Oreo the BR, but not anymore. My first flock of 5 are the leaders though and they get to eat first before the others although there are a lot of brave ones that sneak in to eat too now that Daisy is gone.

I've had that happen. I wouldn't worry too much unless you see a lot of broken eggs and empty shells. Part of our problem was my huge BA sitting on a nest full of eggs and cracking them by accident. I just collected them more often for awhile and eventually I think she figured out how to be more careful. The golf balls are a good idea too. I have always had one golf ball and 3 wooden eggs in our nest boxes. Also check the nest boxes more often and clean them out and add more nesting material too. I use nest pads on the bottom of the shavings as well for more cushion.

I also think the fighting over the nest boxes and Daisy chasing them off the eggs caused some to crack and break too. Since she's been gone, we have not had anymore cracked eggs or eggs on the ground either. Our dog Maxie is not happy that there are no more cracked eggs since she always got those. She loves them and raw eggs are good for dogs.
I'm thinking all the commotion in the nests caused the eggs to break or mean RIR in her constant hovering over the nests might have been pecking the eggs as well. I typically check the nests 3-4 times a day but I was out most of yesterday and that's when it happened. I added more shavings and will look into the nest pads. Where did you get them and do you like them?

Totally different subject but I noticed this breeder is in Pennsylvania like you. Maybe no where near you but I thought it was interesting.

No, that is about 4 or 5 hours from me. I don't know if you ever saw Sally Sunshine's chicks/eggs for sale but she's about 1 1/2 - 2 hours away. She's on my list for White Faced Black Spanish and Crested Cream Legbar for possibly next year. They're so pretty.
Thanks for thinking of me though!

I got mine from here: http://www.qcsupply.com/420355-standard-nesting-pad.html

But they also have them here:

I see a lot of Sally Sunshine's posts on the Easter Egg hatch thread. She seems to know what she's doing. She has a lot of helpful info on BYC as well for people wanting to hatch eggs. She'd be a great source for you. You're so lucky.

I ordered 6 April 7th.

3 EE's
2 BLRW
1 Welsummer

They all looked awful when they arrived... Thursday afternoon.
wobbley and weak.
The welsummer looked the worse off when they arrived, but she put up a good fight.
We lost 2 of the 6- a splash BLRW the prettiest chick, and the fluffiest EE.

The welsummer pulled through. The 2 EE's we have left- one has a straight comb with a fluffy face, one is clean faced with a pea comb. The BLRW left is very dark.. might be black laced?

How are the chicks doing??

Has anyone on here gotten any hatching eggs from other BYC members in the Buy,Sell, Trade section on here? I am thinking of giving my next broody some eggs to hatch.

I am worried about shipped eggs, so first I'll see if I can find someone local. Some of the postings on the Buy, sell, Trade thread look very promising though. So many cool breeds.

I would suggest finding a local source of eggs before considering shipped ones. I just had a TERRIBLE experience with shipped eggs, they are a crapshoot unless you really know what you are doing IMO. I just think you would be disappointed with the hatch rate of shipped eggs, there is so much that can go wrong with them.

Adding,
I also did buy my first shipped eggs from a BYCer on here and it was a bad experience all around. They were a long distance away, he sent 14 eggs and only 2 hatched , one of the dead embryos was also grotesquely deformed which is from his "stock" not from shipping so I was NOT happy. And I'm not a noob at incubating. Not to mention that the eggs were pretty expensive and I'm not at all happy with the quality of the 2 hens that did end up hatching.

Adding agian...
Not to say that the sellers are all bad, just do your research if you decide to go with shipped and make purchases from a very experienced, highly rated seller. I am VERY happy with the other BYCer seller I ordered from.

Thanks... I think I'll get some.

How exciting!! Check out Craigslist; I think you'll be surprised how many people near you have fertilized eggs. Maybe you're looking for certain breeds though? I'm only 15 min from Phila and there are tons of ads for eggs and chicks this time of year... and great breeds too! And what will you do with the boys that hatch out? Soup?

Ok. I have to chime in on this. I ordered some from a BYCer and some from Meyer. Both boxes were packed really nicely. The BYCer I chose is a few states away and Meyer quite far. Of course this was my first hatch but the BYC eggs arrived in so much better shape. I followed some recommendations for allowing the air cells to reattach. It seemed to help. The BIGGEST difference was my post office. My PO held the BYC eggs at the office for me to pick up. They did not hold the Meyer eggs. The Meyer eggs rode around in a truck all day until the mail carrier got to my house, then rode back to the PO when no one was home to sign for them. Agh! Three of my BYC eggs hatched and two were fully developed out of 8. Two Meyer eggs also fully developed but none hatched. Everybody says they hate shipped eggs, but I could not find local eggs. Nowhere! I would order eggs again definitely.

I have ordered eggs from bycers, awesome packaging from I believe her SN is dmrippy. She had a great selection. I have maran eggs from her in my bator now. Don't expect a huge hatch but wanted some new lines for my marans
