Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Did anyone see this headline?

"Mail-order chicks from a single Ohio hatchery have infected 63 people with Salmonella, putting a third of them into the hospital, federal health officials said Friday."

I got scared when I saw Ohio. It is about Mt. Healthy Hatchery, not Meyer, fortunately. Still kind of scary. I feel bad for the people who got those chicks to be able to control their food source and ended up with salmonella poisoning. How awful!

I think it's their 4th time? Mt. not so Healthy Hatchery... keep in mind if you buy from a feed store they could be from there. (Mine are from Ideal this last time

I was at the mall today and as I walked past a large planter outside a goose was sitting in it and hissed at me! Startled the heck out of me. First thing I thought of was Is she broody?
Sure enough, when I came out, she was standing up and i snuck close enough to see at least one large egg in there. I took a pic ... I'll try to post later if it came out ok.

Our silkie/egger we got from someone local recently wasn't doing good this morning. She was all fluffed up and not moving. It was pretty cold out last night. I was thinking maybe she got pushed to the outside of the group. I picked her up and she was cold. I brought her in and put her on a heating pad and forced her to drink water and eat some yogurt (she had no interest and just wanted to sleep). We had to leave the house so I put the ecoglow outside for her and put her under it. We came back and she was off with her friends but still fluffed up. I brought her back to the little chick area and put food in front of her. She started chowing down. I put her friends in there and stuck her under the eco glow again. Checked on her again a little while ago and she was off again with her friends all fluffed up. I stuck her under the eco glow again. She's at least walking around and eating though.
While she was inside she pooped once and it was pure, bright, red blood. Not like poop at all. It was the strangest thing. Her next poop was yellow. I started everyone on a round of corrid just in case. I'm going to put all the little ones in the big coop tonight. It's time for them to get integrated.

I hope your Silkie is fine. Good luck with the integration!

With all the anti bacterial soap and disinfectants our immune systems can't take a little illness without it affecti g us severely

You are absolutely right about the whole anti-bacterial thing. I wash my hands all the time. I'm a bit of a fanatic about it. But, if I can help it, I only use plain old soap and water. No anti-bacterial stuff. Using that is like taking penicillin a few days every month. The only thing that does is build up the germs immunity system! So, plain soap for me!

Too funny about the goose! You are in tune!!! I hope she is able to hatch out her gosling. But, I imagine that would be hard in such a public place.

Wow, that's crazy...sounds like it keeps happening with them too. Scary thing! Think I'll be washing my hands a little more now. I don't have new chicks right now and plan to never buy them from Mt Healthy for sure. Thanks fir sharing.

You are welcome. Mt. Healthy attributes their problems from the fact that they get chicks and eggs from a lot of outside sources, whose bio security they cannot control. Fortunately, I don't think Meyer uses many outside sources and, when they do, they ship directly to the customer and not to Meyer. Makes me feel better about choosing them!

I hate to be a Meyer snob...but I am. I hear of so many people having so many issues from these other hatcheries. I wouldn't order from any of them.

Finger crossed for the silkie/egger. Are you going to keep her quarantined? I'm not sure if I would feel comfortable integrating them :/
