Argh! I replied to this, hit submit, and it said I had already submitted the form, but when I come back to this thread my reply isn't there. Let's try this again...

Glad I could get everyone started on a new animal. Chickens are the gateway animal after all ...

Everyone would love our goats even more if you could visit with them. They are so sweet and love attention. Being dwarfs helps make their mischief cute instead of totally destructive. Ours are Nigerian Dwarfs. Perfect size. They say they have excellent milk but I haven't decided yet if I want to breed the girl (our boy is neutered).

You can see the goats meet our pug for the first time on our facebook page
OMG that is so funny. Personifying our chickens... I do that all the time and sadly I thought that was normal.

Tonight we found a guy who makes coops out of sheds: http://louisville.craigslist.org/grd/4532269073.html

I would cut a hole in the door and add hardware cloth to it & the window for more ventilation.

Going to call & see about delivery options. Fingers crossed that this is a viable option financially! It would be a lot easier than trying to put something together.

I can get a 10 x 10 chain link dog run pretty cheap & then add pavers & hardware cloth to predator proof. Not sure what I want to use on the top to keep hawks/owls out - maybe chicken netting?

I can make a PVC pipe pellet feeder very easily & propably figure out some sort of trough for fermented feed as well. I have the chicken fountain for my watering system. I've staked out 2 areas in my backyard where it will all fit - I'm going to completely enclose everything in the run & am going to get real locks for the gate, egg area, coop door, etc because while racoons, opossums, and fox are a fear...bored teens are also a threat.
I love the coop!!! I was looking at it thinking I would add a window to the door and then that's what you said you were going to do... perfect!!
I hope its a possibility!!

My crate is set up with an old shovel handle to perch on, sand, food, and I will add electrolyte water when I have a better idea of their arrival. The new girls should be headed this way tomorrow. I'm beyond excited. This never gets old!
Almost here!!!

I forgot you were driving there!! That's going to be fun for you. Can't wait to hear all about your trip and now you are an old pro at chicks so you'll be so relaxed about them in the car!!

It's hard not to have favorites when some chickens completely avoid me and others jump on my arm!! Or when big girls are picking on the little girls. Peppy is a cutie :)

Chicken netting works great for our dog run. The panels were 6 ft tall, so it is tall enough for me to walk through, but my hubby has to duck. If you can find something to create a support, it will help keep the netting from sagging. We get leaves and sticks on it all the time, so it kind of weighs it down. We also did several layers, in case one layer got torn. It's been up since March...so far so good.

DH and I discussed the coop expansion. The expense really comes down to hardware cloth. Hopefully we won't need too much more with the way we plan to expand. I'm thinking about adding a second enclosed area as a grow out space. Nope, now that I wrote that down, I will definitely be doing that. Great idea! ;) I haven't hit my first year anniversary with chickens yet and look at me! LOL!

Glad to hear that you had the same idea I did. I just don't think there is enough ventilation. For winter, I think I would just put up something to cut the wind - maybe a tarp, over the windows - as the ventilation would still be needed. All my breeds are pretty good for winter cold. Of course I would bring in hay for the coops for added insulation. If it got horrible, like it did last winter, I could always cover part of the windows with plexiglass, so they got some sunlight as well. I'm thinking for the floor - use that blackjack rubberized coating. Paint the interior a light color, mis-tint pain color so that it could be easily cleaned. I would add a poop board & use sweet PDZ & sand for easy clean up.

That's great to hear! My step-dad & I were already talking about how to add some sort of cover. We were thinking about taking some 2x4 & u-bolting them to the corners of the dog run - then taking some other thinner boards in the middle & running them lengthwise - using that as support for the chicken wire. We are going to completely enclose the coop in the run as well, so that will help some with sagging too.

Now to contact the guy and see how much the delivery & set up is. Hopefully not much as he appears to be local.

We had company over the weekend that hadn't seen my chickens yet but had heard about them for the last 15 months!!! It was so fun to show them off and teach them all about them. Luckily they seemed interested or were good at faking it.
They were shocked that they were so pretty bec. they thought they were just going to be plain white ones or maybe a red one here or there. They loved the Brabanters of course. They also couldn't believe how big the set up is. They were picturing a little coop and maybe 3ft. tall run. LOL. Not quite! The 2 boys that were here are my sons age and they really were fascinated by them. My kids are embarrassed and think its crazy so it was nice to have young ones to show them off to. They were taking pics and hand feeding them and holding a few. It was cute.
It's amazing the ideas people have about chickens until they get a "one on one" experience with them. My family is amazed how pretty the hens are, they had the same ideas about either all white or all red chickens. My kids are old enough to not be embarrassed now and all 3 love the free eggs, so they better not complain.
I wished I had the chickens when they were younger, I would not have minded embarrassing them.

Sounds like you had a great weekend. I look forward to when your new chicks arrive too!

I order my hardware cloth from Amazon. So far I have found that it is cheaper there. I get it in the 50 foot rolls and free delivery. Here's the one I got last, it was $59.99. I'm not sure if you can get it cheaper somewhere else?

Well, I don't know if y'all remember, but I posted a while back that I was letting my Silkie, Margaret, sit on some eggs with the hopes that she would hatch some of my Meyer Cochin bantam boy Po's babies. Unfortunately, today was day 23 with no sign of hatching, and the nest had begun to stink so I removed the eggs. None were fertile. :(
