Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Well ladies and gents... I went on vacation for 9 days and had 178 posts to go through.... WOW! I unfortunately went to the kid's Sneak a Peek day at school and ended up securing a full time job at school as a Special Ed Aide... full time will seriously cut into my selfish supervised free range time with cuddles... I am sad, but trying to contribute for the new dependents...

Loved reading the genetics and when I went to visit my 4 babies this evening after arriving home, my Barred Rock was sleeping on the floor... They have never slept on the floor... I picked her up and brought her in and the hubby and I gave her a once over and she appeared just fine. I will check on her tomorrow and add the second roost in the coop in case someone is getting roost bossy. I guess it was too much to think she was sad from me being away....

well, we cuddled for a while in the house and when I put her back she was ready to come to me again, but it was beyond her bedtime. She looks ship shape... Hey... they are 15 weeks the day after tomorrow... could she be readying for the eggs? Should I open up the nesting boxes now? Perhaps this is a good sign. Any other advice?

I was going to post that I 'think' I'm going to get a CCL egg today but she beat me to it!!! 18 weeks old today!!!

And it's a beautiful OLIVE GREEN??????? LOL. Only me!!! I'm not complaining but just assumed it would be blue or bluish green!

She did a great job :)

It will probably fade a bit to a sage green which I love :)

here's a pic but I can never get the color right...

Izzy my EE's egg on left and Cleo my EE's egg on right.

One more CCL to lay (shs's squatting too) and 2 EE's so still a chance for blue :)

They (the red girls) started out different but ended up looking identical and I refuse to put tags around their legs. Plus they all love Jazz (the rough roo) and live in a pen and coop with him-separate from the rest of the flock. Well mostly separate, 2 of them know how to slip under the fence to get in the big pen when they want a break from their man.
Lunkhead is a silver laced cochin that looks to be leaning towards the full size body instead of smaller size like our blue cochin. I named her that cause her head was and still is so much larger than everyone else. I just looked at her and said "lunkhead" and it stuck. She is very sweet though and constantly runs over for attention
.
How old is Lunkhead now? I would love to see a pic when she's full grown. I think they are so pretty!

Welcome back and congrats on the job!!! Yes, I would open the nests. Start getting them used to them and figuring it out. The earliest I've had one lay is 18 weeks but you never know :) And offer oyster shell or egg shells on the side. Other than that they figure it all out!!

. I don't think I would have the patience I could teach other kids but not my own. So many good programs out there
now too. Good for you!
I'm going to have 3 or 4 GB, I hope I can tell them apart but if not I'm sure I will be calling them The Red Girls
And gotta love the name Lunkhead! Any reason for that?
I've heard of people naming their group of Golden Buffs :pennies", which I thought was neat. I only have one and her name is Ginger and she looks ginger in color too.

All of you have such creative names. my family already thinks I'm bonkers for just naming all of ours, I think we do have some cute names, but so many of you are much more creative then me with names.

Congrats on the new job and welcome back,
I worked in the same schools that all my kids went to in various jobs from teaching to assisting and loved the jobs, although it is not an easy job. It was nice to take my own kids to work with me and they could join me in the classroom when their school days was over.

I agree with Nancy, it does sounds like you need to open up those nest boxes.

I do understand those of you that want to home school, some districts do not seem to have the kids best interests at heart, The schools here were much better when my kids went but slowly starting teaching to the test by the time my last child finished. If I had young ones now I would rethink their education. I am concerned for my grand kids now,

I've been crazy busy and have not been able to keep up with all the posts on here either, this thread has been moving fast, just trying to keep up.

I do love all those creative names and all those chicken and chick pictures!

Well, I'm in the process of painting the coop! Here are some pics of the coop upgrades...

more ventilation in the large door

2 small ventilation windows on the other side

poop board and roost bar flat side up instead of narrow side up (like it was originally). I also installed it so both could be taken out for easy scrubbing. The black paint is Blackjack 57 - it's all watersafe now.

Here's the original coop before modifications!

I will open the nest boxes today and get oyster shells out soon.. So, I should not be worried about sleeping on the floor for a night... I checked on her today and she is running around waiting to free range which I will do soon... right now hawks are flying above so I will wait until they are less active...It is clean the coop day today so I need to power up for that... Husband free ranged the chickens "all by himself" ( his words) when he was traveling back and forth between work and vacation and he said he was scared to death.... hahahahaa... since I have this new job, he will be pitching in in more ways than just free ranging the babies. Loving being home with them... I am one who HATES coming home from vacation, but seeing the chicks makes it a bit easier

Thanks for the advice!

It's painted!!! It will dry a little darker than shown. Glad I splurged for the expensive exterior paint...1 coat coverage since it is so thick, The trim will be a nice light grey color.

That's what Blackjack 57 is, I was confused when you mentioned it before. That sounds like a great paint to use. The modifications are looking great and I love that blue. I look forward to seeing more pics!

Good plan. That's great that your DH is taking a interest and helping out. I look forward to news of your new layers soon!

Blackjack 57 is a roofing product that creates a rubber bond with the floor. The result is a water resistant seal with the plywood that lasts a very long time since it permeates the plywood fibers. It's quite easy to use - roll it on like thick paint. It's a latex base as well. I learned about it from the coop design section. I can now spray out my coop and not have to worry about rotting plywood from standing water on the floor.
