Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Yay! Awesome! They are going to love it! And so are you!

Great, they'll be so happy. They grew up so fast.

Well, everyone is tucked in for the night! I'm going to put them out there earlier and earlier so they get more acclimated to the heat. I'm off Friday, so I will put them out there 1/2 a day & make sure there is plenty of cool water for them too.

My step-dad is coming up Fri night to help build the run & it should be finished Saturday/Sunday - just in time for the coop warming party Monday!!!

Well, tonight is the night! I'm putting the chicks in the coop to sleep! Gotta get them acclimated to the hot temps before they can be out there 24/7 - our temps here have been 90+ with heat index over 100. They aren't acclimated to that since they have been indoors. So I figure I will put them out at night & by this weekend the horrible heat should have broke some!

We have neighbors across the street that recently got chickens. We just found out that they have a rooster since he is now crowing all day long. We're hoping nobody reports him or complains. It's far enough away from us that it's not a bother to us, but we're hoping the animal control people don't bother us and another neighbor that has all hens if they come out to check the coops.
He does have a very pretty sounding crow though. There are no rules against having roosters but the law here is that you have to get a permit and approval from adjacent properties too. I have a strong feeling they have not done that.

I need a blue wheaten too, such beautiful eggs.

I am loving the horse pictures. If I could start over I'd have a big farm like you guys with horses and goats along with a ton of chickens. A huge garden too of course. I have major farm envy.

My PR is going through a bad molt, poor thing has no tail feathers and looks pitiful. A few others are molting too but she's the worst. I only got 7 eggs from 21 hens today, lowest amount ever.

Hopefully no one complains about the crowing. From what I understand we can have roosters but no crowing ... or complaints of crowing. Here is what the code states:
"The keeping of dogs, chickens or other animals under such conditions or in such a manner that, by barking, crowing or otherwise, they disturb the peace and quiet of the immediate neighborhood."
So really, if someone complains of my chickens egg song maybe I've got troubles? I just don't know.

I got 0 eggs from 7 layers the other day

the most I'm getting now is 3/day. I'm feeding 24 birds (granted 10 are only 3 weeks old) but sheesh. I don't even see any molting going on. My RIR dropped something funky out of her bottom the other day right in front of me ... upon inspection it was a shriveled up rubbery sort of egg thing... how's that for a description. It was small, about 1/2 the size of my thumb. Weird. I guess they're just taking a little break.

Ok I was so soooo excited tonight when I went to collect eggs! I got my first olive egg!

I am not sure which one laid it yet I am going to have to stalk them lol

Yes she is a Meyer oe. I am not sure if it's this blue/grey girl or the other that looks almost like her.

How old is Lunkhead now? I would love to see a pic when she's full grown. I think they are so pretty!

I think she was right at 2 months in this pic. They are closer to 3 now, hatched the 1st of June.

I'm hoping as long as Left Eye keeps eating/drinking she will recover. And maybe Gretchen's company will help too! So jealous of all your veggies. We have jalapeños and a few tomatoes! That's it.
Too many deer here they eat absolutely everything.

Trying not to laugh at the mental image of you out there in a helmet.... seems funny but I'm sure it was a bit scary too!! Glad she is OK. Good luck horse shopping!!!

What's funnier is I had a sweatshirt on with the hood up and then my bicycle helmet on over that. I didn't strap it on or anything but the hail was a little bigger than pea size and coming hard, it hurt!

I liked the horse today too. I didn't get a chance to ride him since it started dumping on us right as we were about to saddle him, but I saw him come in from pasture (he came right up to us at the gate), exercise in the round pen, and load in the trailer. He was super friendly and a good mover. He comes with a trailer too! I hope to pick him up on Thursday. He's almost 2 1/2 hours from us but I'll be up in that area again for work on Thursday so fingers crossed I can pick him up that day. We have to get a brand inspection before the transaction can be complete so it just depends on the inspector's schedule.
He is a neat color. Dark brown head but body is a real golden color with darker dappling. Reminds me of a forest at dusk. I'll have to try to take a good pic once he's here.

I drool over those too and not just the eggs, Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas are gorgeous!

Not much going on here, just waiting on eggs, they are 20 weeks old but Amelia the Golden Buff is only just now finding her voice (sounds like she has a frog in her throat) and has no interest in the nest boxes. Ironically Victoria, our Silver Grey Dorking, a breed notorious for maturing late is the most interested in the nest boxes and the hollow eggs in them, she comes and inspects them when I'm cleaning the droppings board everyday. Two days ago I noticed Amelia has a scar on one of her wattles I'm guessing it was either from Morgaine at the top or Baby Buff at the bottom who is trying to pass Amelia.

Oh and at Kindergarten orientation this morning I found out that Rowan's teacher is not one of the three that hatch chicks. She said she can barely keep house plants alive, lol. They will visit the other classes in the spring when the chicks hatch though. At least that's less temptation to take some home, especially when they won't be sexed. We can just plan on getting three chicks from Meyer this spring. I admire those of you who homeschool, I have friends who do, though they don't live nearby. The husband insists on the socialization aspect of public school and I don't think I have the patience plus we need a second income, so yeah. The heavy emphasis on testing is concerning to us though.

DH and I both work full-time and always have. We pulled DD out of school in 2nd grade and just got day care for her during the day. We were lucky to find multiple home day cares that she has gone to through the years. Homeschooling takes WAY less time than public school. In the younger grades we were able to complete a full day of work in 1 hour! Now that she is in jr. high it's different, but we are pretty radical now in our methods so most won't do what we do. And don't get me started on the socialization part. Biggest myth of homeschooling and easiest to read a little and realize the truth. But I won't get on my soap box here.

They should be ready for pick up tomorrow. I figure I'd make electrolytes for them tonight.

Sarsaparilla - I think she's so pretty! I'm kinda glad no BCMs were available so I could get a cuckoo.

Olive - boy? Look at the lack of feathers next to her sister. Yikes!

Strawberry has the cutest personality. She's always checking things out. I can start to tell a difference between her and Pumpkin. She's def the SS. Pretty girl!

And finally Pumpkin. Perhaps the lowest in the pecking order, but a sweetie.

I give the gro-gel on arrival most times. But when I had my 1 week olds and then a new batch arrived I put them right on the crumbles and all was fine. I don't give eggs or treats for about 3 weeks but that's just me. Can't wait to see pics!! Good luck

They are adorable. I hope that they are all girls! So is Plum a Lavendar Orp? and Pumpkin a Welsummer? I can't remember. I am sure you already told us though, sorry. Plum is my favorite, I love her look and coloring, I wish I could get one just like her.

So we had 10 eggs yesterday which I guess our average will be 7 to 10 for awhile. Our oldest son is coming to see us today and he usually picks up 6 or more dozen to take back home and I may be able to send him home with 1 dozen. He'll be disappointed. Of course his younger brother who lives closer stopped in yesterday to get 2 dozen before his older brother got here.

Sometimes I really think that I need more layers. There are feathers everywhere in the coop and run so a lot of those 16 younger hens that are a year old are molting. The older 5 are actually helping keeping up the slack and Buffy my Polish is laying pretty well too.

I feel a little guilty but I am finding it so much easier keeping them in the run and we're not as worried about getting rid of a few before we add a few since the coop is so big, but I would like to extend the run a little more first. Our ratio of coop floor space is good enough for 30 chickens and we have 21. I make sure to give them all the kitchen scraps and I also am now putting all my compost in the run and it seems to be working out well. They do not even seem to be eating anymore food then usual, they may even be eating less.

So maybe I can relax and stop feeling so guilty about keeping them all cooped up?.

WOW.. SoLovely! Had you just washed that, or is that her bloom that shiney? NEAT! I have 2, three week old Meyer OEers growing out. I surely can not wait to get those. Of course, I am sure there will be a range of olive, but that is exactly what I would be hoping for. Congrats.. gorgeous. Of the 2 OE's that I received, (that's all they had left), one is a black chick, and the other is blueish like yours. I just can't wait. Thanks for posting!
