Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Quote:Hi Nancy,

I wanted to give you a shout out to let you know that my little OE is growing up so pretty, and I noticed today that she is getting feathering on her legs! I used to think it was just black mottling, but today she actually jumped up on my lap, which is huge as this group of grow outs are petrified of me. What I thought was dark spots are actually little feathering appearing. So stinkin cute Our girls look a lot alike. I have to get a good picture of her. I think I see the same black spots on your little girls legs. I have to get a good picture to show I think this Olive Egger is obviously a Maran crossed with a CCL. it.

Quote: Awesome!!! They do look alike. I'll have to look closer at her legs tomorrow. I feel bad because I don't spend that much time with them in their run cause it's kinda tight in there. But I didn't spend that much time with my middle aged girls either and some of them are super friendly to me. I swear it's just in their personality to be cuddly or not. IMHO. But when I go in their run to clean every morning and bend over my BO and one of my GB jump on my back every time. I know someone on here has a bossy BO and I was shocked that there was such a thing but now I'm thinking mine have a bit of bossy personality too!! Was that you??

OH MY GOSH!!! My MIL just texted me to say that Peppy was crowing this morning! I can't believe it. I can't wait to hear it. I guess he's finally growing up.
Awesome!! They sound so funny in the beginning!!

I can't wait to see the babies. I think I might try to hatch a few too

Well you have such great breeds you HAVE to hatch those too!!

Yeah, that's not very good advertising... But at least they are honest. I think the Austra Whites are supposed to lay light brown eggs (which, looking at egg color genetics, would make sense when crossing a brown egg layer with a white egg layer).

Yup, I definitely think at least that part is just Frou-Frou. She lays a few eggs here and there over the spring, and then in the summer she lays about 6-8 eggs a month, usually in week-long bursts. I dunno, she's odd. She also has bad eyesight and still kind of honks like a teenager rather than clucking.

This is a Frou-Frou egg, by the way, the one in the center. The one on the right is a Sebright bantam egg, and I think the one on the left belongs to my Silkie, Marge, but I don't remember for sure.

Frou Frou is lucky she found you.... she may have been sold/eaten if she ended up at another house!

I think that was me. Baby has always been a snuggle bunny and started out at the bottom of the pecking order, but after a week or two after they moved outside she started her ridiculous rise to power. At first she just pounced at the other girls to challenge them and no one took her seriously, but she was so persistent and when Clara and Amelia got close to laying they got more submissive both to me and to Baby. She often pecks at the others when I hold them on my lap or pet them, out of jealousy, except for Morgaine (who she will still challenge during free range time, but Morgaine always flares her hackles at her and Baby stays crouched lower but she doesn't mess with her in the run). She hops onto my lap and tries to hop onto my shoulders or back, though I try not to let her do the latter anymore, it hurts and I don't like her butt by my face. Oh Baby.

I found a listing on Craigslist for local, organic, non-gmo, soy free layer feed for only $21 for 50lbs! The farm that sells it is about an hour and a half away. They only thing that has me hesitating is that its a mash. The feeds I've fed (Scratch n Peck and Countryside Organics) aren't really a mash or a crumble as far as I understand it. They have more pieces of grains in them and I want to be moving toward whole grains, not away from them. But local mills tend to just do mash and its soo much cheeper when you factor in shipping. Countryside Organics is only $27.50 but the shipping brings it to $45. We would pick up two 50lb bags and it would only be $42! It's by one of my favorite apple orchards and a farm park so I can justify the gas in my little Prius. I was also thinking mash might not be such a bad thing going into winter, I can add warm water and make an "oatmeal". And just push the goal of fermenting grains back a little, not that I had a lead on local whole grains anyway. Maybe I can talk to them about my interests. Anyone with experience with mash?

I have often wondered about mash as well, sorry I don't have any information to offer. Some peeps swear by it. I know you can ferment that as well can't you? I too am dreaming of going to fermented feed in the New Year. I feed a soy free layer pellet, as I can't have any soy in my diet. I have heard that Countryside Organics is getting closer to my delivery area, but also want to visit a local feed farm that specializes in organic feed close by but also heard you have to order a minimum of 200 lbs. Not sure I can store that much, but maybe I can split an order with someone. The price on that feed sounds awesome, and with a Prius,,it's a win, win in my opinion!

I really want Ameraucanas....I've read they are a good, docile, medium sized chicken to go with. I'm always looking for outside opinions on that though. I'm also stupidly excited about them laying blue eggs.

First off... there is absolutely nothing stupid about being excited about blue eggs! They are awesome, and you're so right to be excited about them! I have a gorgeous black Ameraucana roo with some lavender, splash and blue girls. I named him Clarke Gable. He's such a nice rooster. EE's also are great birds, and give you an array of blue to green eggs.

200lbs of feed really isn't that much. 100lbs is about one trash can of my whole grains. 2 plastic trash cans shouldn't be too hard to find room for.
I plan on ordering from this hatchery to get my first chickens. I'm glad to see all of them looking so nice! Makes me feel like I made a good choice requesting a catalog from them!

Welcome! You'll love them!. :)
