Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Complaining worked! We got 1 egg today. Much better than none. DH was home and checked periodically. We haven't done the wooden or mustard eggs yet though. I'll be out of town the next few days so I'm not sure if it will get done before then or not.

Yeah! Hey any egg counts at this point right!

On another note, I found one of my friend's chickens laying on the ground the other day. She can't support herself on her legs but she is alert and eating/drinking. I'm really hoping
it's not mareks. I separated her immediately but there is such conflicting info out there. There was just a conversation on the CO thread about it. We are having a freeze tonight, I covered her dog crate with a thick moving blanket, hopefully it will be enough. My friend is expecting the worst but I hate dealing with dead animals!
wow hope all is well with the girls, yours and your friends......

@Notablenancy - thanks on the coon trap suggestion, that was the same one we were looking at. They are on order as we speak....

As far as water bowls for winter, we have the heated kind.....we will see how it goes. it was 32 this am when I went out to feed this am. I am not ready for the cold!

I have the heated water bowl coming, it's supposed to be delivered this week some time. A heater for the horse's water should be here this week too. Can't come too soon, we too had a freeze last night. In fact we got about 1/2" of snow yesterday! I'm out of town but DH said everyone's water was frozen this morning. I'm not ready for winter either!

I really hope my friend finds a place to live soon. She has a lead but doesn't know for sure yet. Without her chickens I won't need to lug water every day.

I meant to ask this to everyone who ferments their feed and lives in a cold climate. Where do you ferment in the winter? I have a station outside currently but know I need too move my buckets to be somewhat sheltered from the cold so they don't freeze. So gang hit me with your brilliance :D

Wow, you're quite a friend to lug water for her chickens. I'm so not ready for snow yet. I was going to put some plastic around the little run to keep it dry and free of wind since I only had 13 girls last year and now I have 20 they need more room. My DH doesn't think that will hold up so we are going to put some temporary plywood up. If it's anything like last year they will certainly need it.

sorry I don't ferment. I was just thinking about it tonight and I think one reasons I don't is because of the cold. And I'm afraid it will mold and I won't know it and I'll accidentally kill them. And, I'm just to lazy

I'm still sprouting everyday though.. Lentils, !

Speaking of sprouting.... do I have to use a glass jar to sprout..... anyone try plastic or won't that work??

Last winter I stopped fermenting. I didn't have a good sheltered place to do it. This year I think I'll just stick the bucket in a corner of the coop since it's only 2 steps different than where I keep it now.
As long as you keep the food covered in water you don't have to worry about mold. It really does make the food go further and is so good for them.

I think you were channeling me when you wrote that! I have not tried fermenting for all the same reasons! I'm glad you wrote that, they say confession is good for the soul ...
