x2Everyones chicks are soo cute!!
I have heard of roosters not crowing until close to a year old, and I've seen reports of roosters that just never crowed. This is very rare, though.![]()
I think mine started just about 14 weeks, so you should notice changes soon too. Of course, it depends on the breed too, I think. The EE's and BR's are really started to get more combs and wattles now and the wyandottes too. It was my RIR's that started the earliest. Mine we'll be 18 weeks tomorrow, so should be any day now. I freshened up the nest boxes today and added some herbs to make it more inviting.Thanks. He is most likely a very late bloomer because he still walks around 'peeping'
Of course I probably jinxed myself and will wake up tomorrow morning to crowing!
Went to the feed store and they had 5 week old Blue Andalusians!! Oh how I wish I could have gotten a few!
I offered my rooster to everyone I saw buying chicken feed. No takers![]()
Lynn- 18 weeks now... any changes?? When did yours start to turn red in the face and grow combs? Mine are 14 weeks and nothing. I was going to open the nest boxes next week but I think I'll wait 2 more weeks.
That sounds like they're getting closer to laying!!! I have 2 RIR's and 2 BA's so I'm expecting them to get red first and maybe my BR.By the way, they are getting friendlier, some of them anyway. I can rub my WL on the back now, I used to not be able to touch her. I also petted my lead chicken, the EE Maddie today too, she squatted down when I rubbed her back. She used to be so jumpy as well.
When you get a chance I'd love to see more pictures of your BA's. My little one Yahoo is growing fast. I'd love to see what she will look like soon. Of course, any other chick pictures are good too. That sounds like they're getting closer to laying!!! I have 2 RIR's and 2 BA's so I'm expecting them to get red first and maybe my BR.
X2!!
I have a question for those that have/had roosters... My Buff Brahma (with the bum beak) has not crowed yet. He's 14 weeks today. Is there a chance he won't crow because of his underbite (I can re-post pics if needed) or does that have nothing to do with the crowing. I know I'm just being very hopeful here and a beak may have nothing to do with hormones/throat but I still haven't found him a home and would happily keep him if he doesn't crow. Any chance???
And when is the latest he would start to crow. Seems like 14 weeks is kind of late considering I don't have another rooster that would make him keep quiet. It is a late maturing breed so I guess that has something to do with it?
I was reading about caponizing him but apparently it's to late for that. I wish I would have read about that sooner.
Any ideas???
Mine were fine when I shut their light off, I took the light away when they were about 5 weeks. They are still inside at 10 weeks old but I feel they are still too small to be out there for good and when they were left outside at night(I ran late to come get them a few times) they cry till I come get them. But come the first week of aug they are gonna have to go outside cause I don't have the room for 2 brooders and their play pen.I have a question for everyone. My girls just turning 6 weeks old today, and we plan on moving them into their big girl coop on Tuesday. I was looking at the weather for this week and the temperatures will only be 50-59 degrees at night, and they won't be able to have their heat lamp out their because my barn doesn't have electricity. Is 50 degrees still too cold for them? Oh and how do chicks do that first night without their "nightlight". I'm guessing fine, but I kind of think they would be just like any human child who goes to sleep for the first time without a nightlight. Scared at first. My chicks have never slept a night without their heat lamp on, so I'm kind of curious as to what they will think when they go to bed and it's not on.I'm also happy to say that I am pretty sure Amber and Sunni are pullets after all!![]()
