Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

I am so jealous of everyone getting chicks in the Spring... My chicken wish list is quite long. But considering since we are moving into the city limits, and we'll most likely never be allowed to have more than 8 hens (im not counting Sunni
tongue2.gif
), I won't be able to get more chickens for several years. Which is okay, I'll just be a very jealous girl over here once the baby pictures start back up again on this thread.

We are waiting to hear back from our city council. They haven't officially started allowing chickens yet, but they were having a meeting this past Wednesday to discuss the topic and decide whether or not they would families to have backyard chickens. I'm a little worried because they were saying that we would only get to have a maximum of 4 hens if they decide to allow it, and I have 8 hens. But we got in touch with one of the people on the council, and he is trying to push for people on bigger properties to be allowed to have 8 hens. We'll see how that goes. I really don't want to have to re-home any more hens...
I hope that it all works out for you. Are you all moved now? How is the new place?

I have 18 chicks ordered at the end of March. 5-EE's, 5-golden buffs, 5-barred rocks and 3-olive eggers. So excited! I can't wait! Hopefully the weather will be warmer out by then.

Nice! I can't wait to see these olive egger chicks everyone is talking about. I hope the weather is warmer then too!

Today was the 4th day in a row that it didn't get above 20 degrees during the day and of course single digits at night.
The girls didn't seem to want to eat their layer feed today... they barely touched it! That's never happened. they did eat some eggs and
scratch and ate a bit out of one of the feeders in the run but not the other. Normally they eat about 1/2 the feeder of food, today barely anything.
They have a small feeder in the coop but only eat from that when they
first wake up or just before roosting at night. They never go in the coop just to hang out, just to sleep and lay eggs.
They have plenty of water all day and I see them drinking that.
Any ideas?? Do you think the metal feeder is making the food to cold to want to eat it?

tomorrow is supposed to 'warm up' to 28 then back down to the teens and nights are only 4-9 degrees. Really, we haven't seen this kind of
cold for many years!

I know some of you are in this kind of cold all the time... i'm not panicked or anything, just wondering if anyone has seen this. We'll see what happens
tomorrow during the heat wave

My girls are still using their metal feeder. They don't seem to be eating quite as much as before with the frigid weather. I am giving them a little more scratch, BOSS and oats at night though too, maybe that's why. We've been cold here too, but not as much as you guys. This morning it was in the 20's with a windchill of 7. Brrrrr. Yesterday was actually in the teens, but with the wind today it seems colder. The chickens are all out in the garden searching for bugs, they're crazy! We have not had any snow or ice yet, so it has been a dry cold here.

I have been so worried about them in the cold, but they all seem to be doing fine. I hate going out to the coop now since it is so cold, but I have to go out to check for eggs every few hours before they freeze.

The dog bowl waterer works well but it doesn't hold enough water. I may get a metal waterer soon at TSC and one of those heated bases so they'll have more liquid water and I won't have to refill it so often. I'll give the dog bowl waterer to our dog.

Oh boy... I assumed Olive Eggers were a sure thing to get green eggs! From the description on the Meyer site it seems the crosses they are doing would produce green eggs. I don't care if they're olive, just green would be nice. Maybe I'll call and pick their brains.
And, yes, i'm thinking hard about the Polish because of all the trouble people had with them dying in transit and shortly after. I don't live in an area with a lot of breeders. It's not a big chicken area. And Marek's scares the heck out of me and would only want to buy from someone that vaccinates for it. I still have my reserve in at my feed store for 2 Leghorn and 3 EE's but I didn't have to put money down so i can cancel at any time. I'm holding out to see if they will get the Brabanter's in.

Well aren't you the little chicken enabler!! LOL. Yes, it will be nice to use the Brinsea and with only 5-6 chicks they should fit under there better. I didn't remember you tried to get the Lakenvelder before. That's a shame that happened 2x. They are really pretty birds!

I've got my fingers crossed that you can keep all of your girls!! Maybe you'll have to hide a few

I got my 15 chicks early in March last year and only lost one at about day 5 or so. You're in Ohio so I would think you would be OK. I'm not that far but it still took a few days just because my PO is a bit backwards. Not the fault of Meyer at all :)
Sorry to be an enabler!

Ha, ha!
Here I go again, just sneak in a Polish or two, you're ordering at a good time, they're fun!

I am so ready for Spring!!!! It's just too cold!!! I am going to start some seeds soon indoors to prepare for planting season, it is getting close! Now I need to figure out how to keep those chickens out of the raised beds.

That's crazy. Sorry about those people trying to rule your life. Hens are what you want in the city cause they don't crow!!! Oops maybe they don't know that AND THEY SHOULD! Susie Q

Well, I can't believe it but I just found a local breeder that has TRUE Ameraucana and Araucanas, Easter Eggers, Leghorn, all kinds of Polish and White SILKIES!!!!!! They vaccinate for Merek's, sex them and will take back any accidental roos. Not sure if they sex the silkies though. I may have to get a few of those to make sure I get a pullet.
big_smile.png

they have tons of other breeds and they look really nice. But I like that they're close by, about 1/2 hour so I can bring them home myself. I found them on Craigslist and emailed to see if they have to be ordered. Seems like a nice place and they even rescue unwanted farm animals of any kind.

Girls still seem to be not eating much so I'm going to put feed in a plastic feeder and see what happens. BTW, it's snowing again

I have never ever wanted winter to be over until this year! I too want to get out there to spend more time with them.

Nice! That would be great and since they are so close you can check them out before too. You can send some of that snow over here, still none this winter for us.

I got all mine at Meyer Hatchey.
Perfect health since day one.
Pictures are them as chicks up to now

Great pics and cute chickens!

I added another box, the pink one on the floor, but everyone wants to cram into the boxes together.

Buffy the Polish wants in too. The bottom left box has two chickens in it. I have not been able to check for eggs yet today since someone is always in there. I think I have too many chickens!

and Sally the Salmon Faverolle decided jumping on my shoulder was a great idea, she decided my head was higher and tried jumping there too, but I got her off before that!

and I filled up the skelter several times in the last few days! eggs, eggs, everywhere!!! Yes, there is such a thing as too many chickens!!!

Yes that is awesome! I can't wait to see the birds you get from them!

Not too many chickens... just need another skelter. ;)

We have filled our skelter a couple times too.

I hope that it all works out for you. Are you all moved now? How is the new place?

We actually haven't moved just yet. We are moving into the new house on Tuesday. I just got back from there now. We took the girls their today (all except Sunni) and I got their temporary coop in the garage finished and they are all moved in. My brother is already moved into the house, so he'll be taking care of them for the next few days. Hopefully he doesn't slack on the chicken chores. ;) Knowing him, he'll probably find every shortcut possible. Even though I made it all very simple to do already.

We definitely don't want the hens crowing. ;) Then my chances of having chickens will go to zero! lol
