Well I had one more loss last night. Sad, but I was kind of expecting it. We had one in our bunch that was smaller than the rest and wouldn't eat or drink by itself and spent almost all of the time sleeping. The rest of them are all bright and peppy, which is good.

Yes LynnEBC they seem to be doing great, the little golden buff has perked up and I am sure will make it. I am ready to move them outside to the brooding room, but Sun is supposed to be RIDICULOUSLY cold, and I am sure I would lose sleep worrying about them!!!

Well, I am having some terrible problems with boredom in the flock right now. Ellie's beard is almost completely gone, Lilly has no head feathers, Daffodil's comb is covered in scabs, and this morning I found Ellie hunched down in the nest boxes with most of her back feathers missing and two bloody wounds about the size of a dime and about 1/8th of an inch deep, each. I seperated Ellie and put blu-kote on her wounds. She is still eating and drinking and scratching around at the ground, but those spots look just awful...

I just don't know what to do about their boredom... They are being so mean to each other. I have tried hanging cabbages and giving them all kinds of table scraps, but they demolish the treats so fast that it doesn't make any difference.

We still have 2 ft of snow on the ground, and until the snow melts, we can't even think about starting their coop.

Any ideas for solving boredom?

Thanks for the ideas. The last cabbage I gave them I hung it just about head level. As the cabbage was being eaten, they had to jump higher for it. But they still had it gone in a few hours. It was crazy! I was expecting it to last at least a day or two. I'm going to get some more cabbages asap and hang those up for them. Maybe I'll have to try hanging it higher this time?

I would keep it at the height you have it. Don't want to put it so they can't reach it. I know my 8 girls have it gone just as quickly too! It's crazy!
With the treat ball you put in some scratch of some kind. I use what they suggest on the treat ball. It keeps them busier a lot longer and they have fun pecking at it too.

They are fun to keep in the house for a couple hours LOL! I have heard many people say that their chicks are feathering out fast though. Mine are 5 days old and already have wing feathers

It's funny seeing them with feathers yet some still have that tip on their beak!!! Hopefully it will warm up enough soon! I wish I had a couple broodies to give them to!

If you are really desperate for a quick fix, its a little expensive but the Flock Block from Tractor Supply is a great boredom buster. I also have 2 different recipies I found online to make my own cheaper version. I don't know how many girls you have but the 30lb (i think) block lasted my 50 girls about three days when I was buying them last winter. I haven't bought this winter yet... now I better knock on wood that my girls don't start tearing into each other :/

I've taken pics of some that we are fairly sure of who they are. Maybe I can get pics of the others and you all can help me with identification. When I clean the cage and move the ones over first that I CAN identify, I'm always left with lots of chipmunk striped chicks that kinda sorta look alike at the end lol. And of course, I ordered several breeds that have that characteristic.

I've spoken with Meyer today because I wanted to report the BO that died but they also sent me Partridge Cochins instead of Partridge Rocks. And I can only see one of two Rhode Island Reds that I ordered. So they are working with me on that.

Anyway, here are the babies that I'm pretty sure of...
















I think this might be my Meal Maker?? It looks like a Sicilian Buttercup and I didn't order one.

I've taken pics of some that we are fairly sure of who they are. Maybe I can get pics of the others and you all can help me with identification. Beautiful chicks everyone! You all are making me jealous!

I just made a homemade flock block for my girls. It's in the oven now. I followed this recipe.

I made a few minor changes to it. Im hoping that it turns out nice!

I had to seperate my "top hen" from the rest of the flock too. It's my Buff Orp/RIR mix. Man is she BOSSY! I don't know what has gotten into her. I went out to check on the girls and she was chasing them all around the coop trying to yank their head feathers out! So, I'll have to keep her seperated for a few days and knock her down in the pecking order. Naughty girl...

Ellie is doing good. She doesn't even seem to realize that she has two big wounds in her back. She's too busy hollering at me to put her back in the coop. She was getting cold, since she wasnt with the other girls, so I put a heat lamp over her cage. That seemed to cheer her up a bit.

For those of you that have experience with wounds similar to this, how often do I spray blu-Kote on her? Is there anything else that I shoulder be cleaning her wounds with? These kind of wounds are a new thing to me.

THANK YOU for posting the flock block recipe. I was about to look it up. I'm trying it this weekend. Nothing's worse than bored chickens.
