Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Nancy, have you tried sugar water? I had a RIR hen with a prolapse a few years back. I soaked her n sugar water, and it retracted back in without me pushing it in at all. The other thing you need to do is keep her in total darkness. I can remember the amount of sugar to water, but it worked!!

I tried honey, I assume pretty much the same as sugar water, and it didn't work. I'm going to go check on her shortly. Thanks for the suggestion. Depending on how it looks I'll give it another soak but don't want to aggravate it to much.

Tracked my order and found it was at the post office about an hour away so I decided to make the trip during rush hour traffic and pick em up....welcome home girls!! Hatched on 4/9 arrived home 4/10 all arrived alert and hungry!!

Yes, they come in the week of the 21st! I think they get shipments Wed and Friday.
I was at the feed store the other day and he said the hatchery had cancelled a few of the breeds for that week but so far the Brabanter's are still supposed to come in.

I'm excited to get them. I think I'm going with 2 of those, 2 EE's and 1 Silkie. We'll see when I get there

Oh, and how much cayenne pepper should I add to the mash? I have a great store near here that sells nuts, candy, spices, tea, coffee and more in bulk. I got a whole pound of pepper for $1.99! That's a lot of pepper

Nancy, good luck with the new babies. As for the older birds, did you see this article about feather picking??

It says that lice/mite infestations most likely start around the vent. So, after the treatments that you did, I wouldn't put them or you through that ordeal, again, unless you actually see bugs. It sounds like the loss of head feathers is most likely from agression but the two with bare bellies may be broody or picking them out to eat them for protein. Have you compared the protein levels on your new and old feed? Do you give a lot of stale bread or empty calorie/less nutritious snacks? You can try that Blu-coat to keep others from picking at the bare spots and drawing blood. Other than that, I would check the feed and wait and see. Like the article said, sometimes loss of feathers is just a mystery.

New feed=old feed: Both the same level of protein, calcium and major ingredients. And I was kinda thinking maybe an allergy to the new feed. There are 4 with bare bellies though, and one with what seems like just dry skin so it seems odd that 5 out of 13 would have a reaction. Both by the way are plant protein not animal. Can't find any feed with animal protein and the people at the store look at me like I have 5 heads when I asked for it.
As far as treats go, I have never given bread or what I think is empty calories and everything I do give is nutritious except for cracked corn but they don't get a ton of it. Just a big handful every other day. They do get BOSS, eggs, meat, fish, various greens, fruit, weeds and sprouts I sprout for them. (we laugh they eat healthier than we do

)
I think I will get blu coat at the feed store in a few days and try that.
I read another suggestion that maybe they were going to go broody so plucked the feathers and then snapped out of it? But I think you're right, I may just never know. I'm not going to put them through the Sevin ordeal again. I'm just going to watch and wait. Maybe add more animal protein and eggs, start giving them yogurt once a week and pepper/squash seeds for natural worming.

Soo cute! Good choice with the Dominique, that's the breed of my friend's favorite hen, she loves to snuggle. Here are a few pics from yesterday, 4 days old, they tried yogurt though weren't so sure about it until I added flax seed, two of them stepped in it when I first put it in a wider bowl, poor dears. They all ate mealworms out of my hand, though mostly I've been putting them in the clump of grass so they can forage, I did want them to start associating me with treats. Everyone that hadn't been brave enough Wednesday, hopped up on top of the Ecoglow. A few of them fell asleep in the middle of foraging, having to much fun to go under the warmer. They went through a ton of feed (okay more like a few pints) and sadly I took their eye pillow/couch/security blanket away as it was getting too messy and getting shavings all over the house. I haven't taken any pics today but everyone's wing feathers are developing nicely, they all got snuggle time (I love it when they fall asleep in your hands or on your chest, my Maran likes perching on my finger and the Buff Orp and Dorking will walk onto my hand if I lay it flat in the shavings, right now they are foraging and chasing each other when one finds something. So funny.

I think I have a Rhode Island Roo!

Here are two hens for comparison:

What do you think? The first one has a larger comb that has a pink tint and the others have much smaller yellow combs.

Fortunately, I can have roosters because I am on more than 3 acres, but, do I want one? What are the advantages and disadvantages?? I'd love to hear everyone's opinion!
