Wow, not much longer for those chicks!! Excited for you!!Yes, they come in the week of the 21st! I think they get shipments Wed and Friday.
I was at the feed store the other day and he said the hatchery had cancelled a few of the breeds for that week but so far the Brabanter's are still supposed to come in.I'm excited to get them. I think I'm going with 2 of those, 2 EE's and 1 Silkie. We'll see when I get there![]()

Oh, and how much cayenne pepper should I add to the mash? I have a great store near here that sells nuts, candy, spices, tea, coffee and more in bulk. I got a whole pound of pepper for $1.99! That's a lot of pepper
Is your DH having a procedure today?? Good luck!
Thanks!I hope everything goes well for Lynn's husband!
Nancy, good luck with the new babies. As for the older birds, did you see this article about feather picking??
http://hencam.com/faq/bare-butts-feather-loss-and-feather-picking/
It says that lice/mite infestations most likely start around the vent. So, after the treatments that you did, I wouldn't put them or you through that ordeal, again, unless you actually see bugs. It sounds like the loss of head feathers is most likely from agression but the two with bare bellies may be broody or picking them out to eat them for protein. Have you compared the protein levels on your new and old feed? Do you give a lot of stale bread or empty calorie/less nutritious snacks? You can try that Blu-coat to keep others from picking at the bare spots and drawing blood. Other than that, I would check the feed and wait and see. Like the article said, sometimes loss of feathers is just a mystery.
Way too cute!!! They are so much fun at that age and grow so fast. I am glad our kids did not grow that fast!! They grew up faster then I wanted, but at least not that fast.Soo cute! Good choice with the Dominique, that's the breed of my friend's favorite hen, she loves to snuggle. Here are a few pics from yesterday, 4 days old, they tried yogurt though weren't so sure about it until I added flax seed, two of them stepped in it when I first put it in a wider bowl, poor dears. They all ate mealworms out of my hand, though mostly I've been putting them in the clump of grass so they can forage, I did want them to start associating me with treats. Everyone that hadn't been brave enough Wednesday, hopped up on top of the Ecoglow. A few of them fell asleep in the middle of foraging, having to much fun to go under the warmer. They went through a ton of feed (okay more like a few pints) and sadly I took their eye pillow/couch/security blanket away as it was getting too messy and getting shavings all over the house. I haven't taken any pics today but everyone's wing feathers are developing nicely, they all got snuggle time (I love it when they fall asleep in your hands or on your chest, my Maran likes perching on my finger and the Buff Orp and Dorking will walk onto my hand if I lay it flat in the shavings, right now they are foraging and chasing each other when one finds something. So funny.

Yup, looks like a roo to me too!I think I have a Rhode Island Roo!
Here are two hens for comparison:
What do you think? The first one has a larger comb that has a pink tint and the others have much smaller yellow combs.
Fortunately, I can have roosters because I am on more than 3 acres, but, do I want one? What are the advantages and disadvantages?? I'd love to hear everyone's opinion!
I hope the rest do okay, sorry for the 2 that you lost.I ordered 6 April 7th.
3 EE's
2 BLRW
1 Welsummer
They all looked awful when they arrived... Thursday afternoon.
wobbley and weak.
The welsummer looked the worse off when they arrived, but she put up a good fight.
We lost 2 of the 6- a splash BLRW the prettiest chick, and the fluffiest EE.
The welsummer pulled through. The 2 EE's we have left- one has a straight comb with a fluffy face, one is clean faced with a pea comb. The BLRW left is very dark.. might be black laced?
Just have to say, "ahhhhhhhhh"!!!! So cute!!
Can't help, but they are so cute, love the gray/silver coloring. Here are my 12 day old Meyer 'Marans mix" and Olive eggers.
Pictures are really hard to take, sorry. Hopefully you can tell me what I have.
I am pretty sure there is at least one roo. I am sooooo bummed. I think out of the whole batch I have at least three roos. I can't believe I waited, and paid for pullets...blah.
Anyway.
What kind of Marans do you think these are?
#1 Black copper?
#2 Black copper?
#3 black copper? not much of a mix huh?
These are the olive eggers, I think. I don't know what they are if they aren't OE
#1
#2
#3
Thoughts? Feedback? Anyone else have Meyer chicks looking like these OE?
They are growing fast and in that teenage stage now!!
Only a guess but I think #2 is your only pullet. Could be wrong, I'm no expert. They are pretty chicks.
Thanks Lynn! I'm hoping you are right. The other two I'm almost positive are boys. I hope the middle one is a girl.
Are you going to keep them, is they're roos? Thanks Lynn! I'm hoping you are right. The other two I'm almost positive are boys. I hope the middle one is a girl.
Such beautiful birds! I need to update pics on all my girls. I like how you described each one too. Nice flock!Forgot to post these here yesterday! Here are my youngest Meyer birds at 11 months old.I also added some thoughts on their personalities for anyone that's interested in these breeds. Sorry in advance for such a long post!![]()
Huka the Silver Lakenvelder. She started out shy, but has come around now. She's still a bit flighty, but is okay as long as you don't move too fast. She was the last to start laying of these girls and only lays 4 times a week or so.
Ihi the Golden Campine. This bird is always moving! She's not terribly flighty, but like Huka, she does get a bit jumpy if you move too fast. She's pretty friendly, though, and comes over to talk to me all the time. Sh lays about as much as Huka as well, maybe a bit more.
Marama the Egyptian Fayoumi. She is so sassy! She's not a lap bird and doesn't like to be picked up, but isn't really all that shy and lets me pet her if she comes over. She also lays only 4 times a week or so. She's also the smallest of the lot of them, even smaller than Po the bantam Cochin rooster!
Rangi the Ancona. Rangi, Rangi, Rangi. She's the most personable of them all. She's a bit unpredictable sometimes and you never know when you're going to end up with Rangi on your shoulder. She is a sweetie, though, and lets me pet her or pick her up whenever. Frostbite got her bad this winter, although it was likely as a result of my coop flooding right before we got all that frigid weather! She lays probably 5 or 6 times a week.
Roha the Exchequer Leghorn. This bird is a sweetheart and a ham for attention! She runs over whenever she sees me and just basks in any attention I give her! She lays 4 eggs a week or so.
Whiri the Light Brown Leghorn. I can't get anywhere near this bird without her panicking. She's not friendly in any way. She is, however, just the most gorgeous little hen I have! She lays about 5 or 6 eggs a week.
Po the black Cochin bantam (from Meyer's Black Frizzle Cochin bantams). I have never liked roosters, but Mr. Po has changed my attitude toward them. He is gentle with his girls and respectful to me. I see him keep the peace by breaking up fights between the girls, and plus he's always very alert to possible predators such as birds flying over. Such a good boy!
