Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Lol! Oops! I meant that I didn't think Jon's chick was a blue amerecuana because she doesn't look like mine. BUT she might possibly be a splash. I am not good at chick identification.

I have been finding a lot of pictures showing me splash ameraucana's looking like that so I guess I just need to wait and see if she darkens up

I would do exactly what you are planning. We have the same predators. We used hardware cloth all over, but I would feel comfortable using welded wire in the higher areas as long as the hardware cloth was along the bottom.

I for my stationary coop, I use this welded wire fencing for my run. http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/welded-wire-60-in-x-100-ft

Since the babies aren't allowed access to that run until they are older, it works just fine. I lock them all up at night so it doesn't need to have hardware cloth on it. I do use hardware cloth on my grow out pens and hoop coops for predator safety. Even though those are in electrified fencing.

Thanks for the responses! The tractor supply welded wire is just what I was going to get! My chickens will be just under 8 weeks old when we let them loose in the run. I think their heads are still small enough to fit through a 2" hole, so, I don't want to chance it! Plus, if we get babies again next year, they would be protected, as well. I just don't want to do the entire run in hardware cloth. It is so much more money. But, if that was the only way to protect the flock from predators, I would do it. Glad to hear that the welded wire has worked well for you guys.

I cannot wait to move the chicks from the brooder into the coop. The girls and or boys (a few are still questionable) are getting so big and my garage is so dusty! I don't know if we will ever get it clean!! My husband's poor cars are all white.

Here's one of our girls, Guinevere

I just love the Barred Rocks and Dominiques. They are by far the friendliest. Yes, that is chicken poop on my shirt. Welcome to the life of a chicken lover!

I was going to move the chicks to the coop last Sunday but we didn't finish the run and I figured it would be best to move them after we have done most of the hammering. The move will be traumatic enough - for them and me! Lol

Wish us luck!

Omg, I have mites. The girls haven't showed any signs of them but I saw the crawling on the side of the coop. If the trim wasn't white, I would never had seen them. I sprayed with poultry protector and put poultry dust on the ground. I don't see them on any of the girls, but sprayed their vents and under wings with poultry protector too. Hopefully this won't be a problem. Are mites seasonal pests? Seems like everybody's talking about them right now.
Oh no, so sorry.

BTW, blue AMs are available June 23 and July 28... Keeping my eyes on them in case I have to add then to my August order
"in case you have to"...... I like that!

Here are some of the others.

BCM

Welsomers

Black silkie

Egyptian fayoumis

Leghorn

White silkie
Love them all!

Here is the other one.
I'm interested to see what your chick is...wish I could help.

This is how it looked. But I know others have not had that. I think they did it just to keep them selfs organized. It's got to be hard to keep all these orders from getting all mixed up!
Nice, I wish they told me. I had a BR for my Meal Maker in my very first order and a Golden Buff in my last order. I was also given an extra chick in my last order too which may have been my Sicilian Buttercup, but she died the day I received them.

This is my blue am. Not from Meyer, but why I don't think she's an am. Maybe a white EE. Or maybe she's the leghorn. I am not good at this!
Adorable!!!

Yup, so it must have been a fox. They kill everything they can and then keep coming back and bringing the bodies to the den for the babies to eat. They had about 7 killed a few years ago. They were free ranging and they saw it right from the kitchen window. Fox ran around killing all it could. Since then they don't free range anymore. They even had 2 roosters and it got one of them. It's pretty rough around our way. I was looking at my Dropcam this morning and my DH was in the run doing something and all of a sudden there was a big black dog outside the run! The chickens started freaking out flying all over the run and I could hear my dog start barking. I went running outside and my DH said it came up from the woods. He could hear the owners calling for it. THAT"S my biggest predator! I stand right next to them every time I free range them and I still know if a dog comes up there's only so much I can do.

I still want a Welsummer too. There's a breeder about 1 1/2 hour from here and she has BCM and Welsummers, among others, and her Welsummer eggs are darker than the BCM's. Such pretty birds too.
Dogs can do so much damage and apparently fox too. At least they did eat them. The dogs just make it a game which somehow seems so much worse.

One of these days we'll have those Welsummers we always wanted.

ADVICE NEEDED!!

We have the posts in the ground for our run and now have to attach the cross boards and fencing. I would love to do hardware cloth around the whole thing but that would cost so much. The run is about 22'x28'! I am thinking of doing 1/2" hardware cloth at the bottom 2 feet to prevent something from reaching through and grabbing our hens and 2 feet out under the ground to discourage diggers. We would use 2"x4" welded wire on the top 5 feet of the walls and for the roof to prevent predators from climbing over or swooping down. We have a lot of foxes and hawks in our area, plus skunks, raccoons and possums. Will the welded wire keep them out? It is actually 14 gauge instead of 19 for the hardware cloth, so the steel is stronger even though it is a much wider opening. What kind of materials did you use?

We are getting the supplies tonight, so, a quick response would be appreciated!
I've heard of people using the hardware cloth for the bottom of the run and chicken wire for the top. I wish I knew of doing it that way since we've spent so much on hardware cloth. Our run is covered top, bottom and sides in hardware cloth.

my husband was going to construct a box of sorts out of our leftover wire to place in front of the nest box. I may do that or use a dog crate that opens on the end.

Always nice when the husband's step up. Mine just told me that we're going to work on a new coop door tomorrow. We've needed to work on it for awhile, so I just waited until he was ready.

Best wishes for the move! Always distressing!!

That is a cute BR that you have there. My BR's are the friendliest. I had 3 BR's at one time and one Dominique. I'd like to get another Dominique one day too since she was the sweetest hen.

Quick question for all of you with bantams. Are they flighty?
Other then 4-6 breeds of bantam that it was breed out of. they are some of the most flighty skittish birds you can own but some people who do free range and don't mind them roosting in the trees at night and like tiny eggs (they have a awesome flavor if you can find them) they are perfect they don't eat much eather. I helped raise a flock of 15-40 bantams (once they got out of their pens we couldn't get them back in so we don't know the exact number) with my grandma they have an amazing predator sense but that means you can't get with in 5 feet of them eather. So it would be worth your while to get them young and tame them the best you can

I don't have any Welsumers but I had 2 Buff Brahma. One was feathering much slower than the other so people told me that it was a cockerel but it turned out that the faster feathering one was a cockerel! I'm sure that doesn't make you feel better if you're hoping for a pullet though. And the other issue I had was a Columbian Wyandotte (Sweet Pea whose name was changed to Pipsqueak) She was soooo slow to feather and was really tiny compared to all the other girls. But now she is the same size as the rest and isn't even at the bottom of the pecking order. So moral of the story... you just have to wait it out. But I'm voting for a slow growing pullet

Oh UGGGHHHH! At least you know what you are facing. Not fun though. I do think they are more prone to be around in the spring/summer. I have been looking at my coop to see if I see any walking around but nothing. I really think mine have the feather mites. I'm STILL waiting for my sulfur dip to come in the mail to wash a few of them. I ordered it a week ago.

Are you sure this isn't your Leghorn? I'm terrible at chick identification though.

VERY cute!!! The one you have labeled as Leghorn is that an Exchequer Leghorn? Or something else??

Why don't you think she's an Am?
I'm so glad we have the right to shoot dogs that are after our animals here it gives the serveral retards down the street a reason to keep their dog's in their yard (where they are supost to be) i think i have lost more bird to dog's they any other predator we have

Just saw this...
