Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

I fell on the bad ice we had back in January & partially dislocated my right shoulder. It popped back in by itself, but not 100% correctly & I got a compression fracture at the head of the humerus (arm bone where it makes the shoulder joint). The injury caused a frozen shoulder, so I had to have surgery to fix that. I can now move it but man is it one of the most painful orthopaedic surgeries around! And I have nicknamed my PT "the physical torturer". But in the end, my shoulder should be pretty good, though it might not be 100% pain free.
Wow, OUCH!! I wish you a speedy recovery!

VERY NICE!!!
Why, thank you!

Everyone seems normal thank goodness :)

That is absolutely fantastic!! They must have been in heaven on that green grass and that looks like a huge fenced in area!! We have tried tomatoes several times but it just doesn't work here. The deer figure out some way to get to them no matter what we do. We would need an 8 foot fence around our whole property and that's not happening. We have such a nice view into the woods and it would completely block it and we're not even talking about $$. We put tomatoes on the tennis court one year and they walked across the bridge to it and ate them. Another year we put a small fence around the area and they pushed it in and ate them. Another we put them in pots on the patio about 2 ft. from the house and they ate them too. I think my DH is trying something new this year and growing them upside down next to the coop. I'll keep you posted... should be interesting. I can grow my herbs every year and that makes me happy. I have parsley, sage rosemary, thyme, tons of basil, and lemon balm and we have jalapeno peppers too!
Oh, and how do you keep the dog away from the chickens or is she ok with them?
They loved it and the 2nd time ot they explored pretty far.

We had problems with squirrels eating our tomatoes last year. I blocked out the chickens but the squirrels climbed the fence of bird netting and went in through the top. I think it was 10 feet up but somehow they figured it out. They were delicious tomatoes too. Our dog is an outside dog so she'll keep the deer away, plus the fence is 5 feet high too which I know they could jump but with Maxie guarding, I don't think they would. We do have deer around here but I guess since the dog is outside we never had a problem. I have a lot of herbs in the ground too, so nice when you can walk outside snip a few off and then cook with them. I work with what grows and works here, so far I have never been successful with melons, it is a challenge for me now.

Maxie stays locked in the garage while the chickens free range and so far I am out supervising while they explore. I really am supervising since my garden areas are not blocked off from the yet. This will be the challenging part. We may try to see if Maxie will coexist with the chickens, but I am really afraid that will never happen. She loves to chase things and does not always listen very well. She does leave my garden alone when I tell her no, but I am not sure if she'll be able to resist the chickens.

That's awesome! What a relief that must be to finally be done with! The chickens look happy out there. I bet your dog doesn't know what to do with herself!
She was so confused when we unleashed her. She finally took off and ran like a race horse along the perimeter of the whole fence. She is a weird dog though. She only goes out and explores while we are there and if there is a squirrel or large truck to chase, otherwise she just lays in the garage. Maybe she is getting old? I is a lot more fun to watch the chickens, they really take advantage of the yard.
I love gardening, too. I haven't had much luck with vegetables, yet. I never have enough time to tend to them or enough fencing to keep deer away. For now, I am sticking to my flower gardens, some container gardens for tomatoes and herbs on my deck and a few raised planters for the chickens. I will dream bigger for next year. But, isn't great that feeding your addictions also feeds you and your family? Win-win!,
That is so true, I will have to tell my DL that one. "Win-win"
But I just added another bird to my order from Meyers! LOL! I'm insane!!! My son is going to be so upset with me! I added the Black Copper Maran's female :) Of course if one of my other 1st choices opens up, then I will switch...

I need to STOP looking at the Meyers page! I'm at my max # of chickens!!!!
We're all just as bad!! A little chicken crazy we are!!!

You are in good company (or is it bad?), I just ordered 2 started Easter Egger pullets. I should have them on June 5th. The countdown begins . . .
Nice, congrats, I hope they arrive safe and healthy.

I know, as soon as I finished posting I saw Nancy's post above mine and felt guilty for posting so many pics after her heartbreaking news

Here is a pic from yesterday when most of the other girls were hanging farther back she edged over to me to be petted, of course our Buff Orpington was on my lap when I took this. I joked with my husband yesterday that I wish we could have all Orpingtons and Dorkings. Just reacting to the drama with our Buckeye who is very likely a roo or a really aggressive pullet, frequently picking fights. Yesterday s/he jumped up in the air and aimed her claws at another chick, twice. Finally Amelia or Golden Buff tapped her on the head twice and Clara our EE raised her hackles back at the Buckeye. I've never seen Clara have conflict with anyone, she is such a giant hawk compared to them. Seriously considering taking the Buckeye to a local TSC swap tomorrow and just cutting our losses, we were going to wait until she crowed. Her comb also just turned pink yesterday. Early suspicions were extremely slow growing tail (like had a smooth short fuzzy bottom two weeks after all the girls had one inch tails) and standing tall while the others hid when my husband had an epic sneeze. Also the loudest. Sigh.

That's be good if you can change him/her out at the swap. I should have taken my WR out of the flock a lot sooner then I did, she was a terror to the younger ones and she started doing it as a chick. Not a rooster, just a bully. Now that she is gone (she became chicken stew) they are all so much nicer and more friendly too.

You could always trade your Australorp for the Black Copper Marans *innocent smile* I was debating between the two and chose the BCM for the darker eggs, feathered feet and pretty copper neck. She is a sweetie, she used to perch on my finger, hunker down and go right to sleep. I know Australorps lay more but come on you know your son wants chocolate eggs! Lol. Though I can't actually speak for the eggs, ours are only 5 and a half weeks old
wink.png

You guys are really bring up my list for next year, now I need a BCM.
hmm.png
So cute!!!

rnchick74,
If you are worried about the Black Copper Marans not laying as well, my BCM hens lay about 4-5 eggs a week and they are not hatchery stock, so Meyer girls *should* lay better than that since they breed for production. I am just warning you not to expect moderately dark eggs from them.

My Meyer Buff Orps are great layers and give me about 5 eggs a week each. I think my Barred Rocks and RIR are actually the best non-hybrid layers. The BRs started laying almost a month before any of the other brown layers, they were even 2 weeks ahead of the white Leghorns.
Same with the Cuckoo Marans with the hatchery birds. I have 2 but only one lays the darker eggs. I have a Golden Buff too that lays a really dark egg like the maran. The other maran lays pretty spotted eggs but just regular brown. My Meyers BO, RIR and Golden Buff are my best layers even better then my Light Brown Leghorns. Even my Buff LAced Polish lays a lot more then I thought she would.

Thank you... all the girls are ok so hopefully it was a freak occurrence.

For what it's worth I have 2 BA's and neither are fantastic layers. One only lays a few times a week and the other I think about 4. I would rather have ordered just 1 BA but my DH wanted a big black bird and I got 2 in case one ended up being a roo or died. I figured since he worked outside every Sat and Sun for 3 months to build my run the least I could do was get a chicken he wanted. LOL.

My RIR and EE's are my best layers... 6 a week and my RIR was the first to lay and my one EE the week later. Although one EE waited till she was 10 months old to lay but it's a pretty green egg so worth the wait.
wink.png
My BA lays about 4 to 5 times a week. My EE's lay about the same.. I want more EE's, I love those green eggs.

Good to hear that the rest of your flock is doing okay.

Hi everyone! I'm expecting my shipment from Meyers in about a week and a half. Ordered online a couple of weeks ago, kept checking the site, called to change my order to add a Blue Americauna, then called again today to add 2 speckled sussex. It's almost like winning the lottery when what you want is available to ship at the same time as the original order!

#1 - never dreamed I'd be willing to pay $20 for one chick BAM
#2 Staff was awesome both times I added chicks to the order. Sort of chuckled when I told them today that I was keeping this addition to the order secret from my husband since I don't think he will notice I added some more...

I am waiting to bring home a batch from Murray McMurray that my sister-in-law is keeping for me for now. 3 weeks old and all doing well. She added to her flock too so some of the chicks are hers.

I don't even have them home yet and I have ants in my pants!!!
Oh wow, a week, how exciting! You are so right about "winning the lottery" when they have what you want. You have a great selection coming, so jealous!

So how many chickens do you have already? and how many are you getting?

Are you picking up the EE's or do they ship started pullets?  I would like to try that next time rather than chicks. If they come from a hatchery do you think they have to be quarantined?

I am glad the others are ok!

Meyers is 9 hours away from me. It would not be practical for me to go get them. They are shipping the pullets overnight. They will ship on June 4th and I should have them before noon on the 5th. Please pray that the weather is not too hot for them!

In their catalog, it says that the started pullets "are fully vaccinated (at 8 different ages), beak trimmed, floor raised, treated for intestinal worms, and ready to move into your laying barn;" so, I am hoping that they will be ok being integrated right away. I think I will just keep them separated the first day until night and move the two EEs into the coop when all are asleep, or I will put them in the run with the others a couple of hours after I get them (after I check them out and they seem to be healthy, etc.). Either way, hopefully, they will all adjust quickly! It is kind of scary to think of losing them all from illness by introducing new chickens to the flock but I suppose getting them from Meyer is better than getting them from a local farm that doesn't vaccinate and has no health board regulating them. It's a risk that I hope will pay off. I have been kicking myself for not ordering some EEs as baby chicks and I have been so envious of all of you who have them!

Ironically, these 2 chickens are costing me about the same as 15 day old chicks. However, I haven't had to feed them for the first 16-20 weeks either, so, maybe the cost is not so much more. I really don't want to do that chicken math and see what I have spent on my chicks so far.

Well, I hope you can learn from my experiment! I will definitely keep you posted.

I would still quarantine, you may have to treat for mites/lice or other minor issues. Not to mention that you can't just toss two new birds into an established flock, they will most likely be bullied out of the coop and away from the food and water. A cage/pen inside the coop will help them establish themselves into the flock so when they are introduced, there shouldn't be too much fighting/bullying.

That's true. I didn't think about mites or lice. I did figure that I would put them in the brooder in the garage for awhile so that I could check them over. I am not sure about the bullying as the 2 new birds will be much older than all the others. They will be 16-20 weeks old while the existing flock will be only 11 weeks at that time. There are so many different opinions about how and when to integrate, it is really tough to decide. If I were to separate them in the run for awhile, I would have to bring them in and out from the garage each morning and night as I do not have any housing for them besides the main coop. Any suggestions on temporary housing inside the run that they can sleep in?

I would like to see pics of what they mean by beak trimmed
May by if u put a small fence in there when I added that what I did for a week

I have 13 at my sister-in-laws (the 3 week old ones) and 12 coming from Meyer.

I am really not sure how I was able to talk Hubs in to them after all these years. And, surprisingly he's been pretty good about the number. We'll see how it plays out once they are all home. ;)

My buff brahma is my best layer! Surprise! She was a few weeks behind the other, but has only missed one day since. My RIR is a close second. I hope the new girls will be just as productive. I still love finding eggs waiting for me everyday! I really hope the AM becomes available for my hatch date. :fl

Yeah, I'm hoping a cream legbar becomes available for my hatch day!!! I've fallen in love with the looks of that one! Though the blue am are a close second!

Nancy I don't keep them from pooping on the furniture, though most days they only poop on the rug or me, I put the towel back on the chair last night
wink.png
LOL... mine are such pooping machines I can't do that!! Although my dog could just follow them around and 'clean up' after them for me!

Oh I totally missed the part where you said the existing flock is all babies! In that case, I would worry that the new POL pullets would bully the young ones.

I would partition off a small section of the coop after the new ones go through quarantine. A large dog cage would work too. Then after a week or so, I would start letting them out during the day then locking them up at night for the next week. Or that's what I do when I introduce my younger (15wks) ones to the older established flock. Make sure you have two food and water sources just so there is no fighting over them.
If they're all the pretty much the same size would there be bullying?
Before I decided on the additional coop I was going to put some temporary fencing up and put a small dog house or even one of those plastic dog crates inside so they could sleep in there at night and wouldn't have to bring them back and forth into my garage. You may even find a very small homemade chicken coop on crags list and then you could use that for sick/hurt ones when needed. All you really need is a wooden box with a hole on 2 sides for ventilation and a little door of course too. As long as your run is completely predator proof that is.

How exciting!!! I think a few of us have snuck a chick or 2 into our orders

You're going to fit right in here

Oh boy I wish. My BB has a very different looking egg so I know when she lays... 2 maybe 3 a week if I'm lucky

But she's so pretty I don't care.

My little CCL's have poofs on their heads now... so cute. Can't wait to see their eggs. (not from Meyer though, from a local breeder I lucked into)

I need help! I just leave the page open on my phone and keep hitting the refresh button.

Why do you need help? Sounds normal to me

I'm having doubts that my wish for a CL will be fulfilled...maybe I need to start stalking the breeder pages?

And your local page! I found a guy who is close to me...who am I kidding! He's actually 6 hours away, but I'm still considering it. Especially cause the CL can be sexed immediately! Fool proof! Well, it's my backup plan at least. The only thing I don't like is that they are not vaccinated. I bought the mareks vac for my three roos when I hatched them (hoping for all 16 eggs to hatch). Don't know if I'd want to order it for one bird.
