Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Thoughts on Buff Orpingtons? Too broody?

Well, I waited too long anyway. They aren't available on my ship date next week now. Oh well. I need to wait until spring to even think about any more any way. I do have a lavendar orpington in this shipment, so I would assume temperament would be similar. I want something that my 2 year old grandson can handle. :)

I wanted to share some updates on my babies. Not all the chicks cooperated with the photo session tonight... Some of these are from Meyer, a couple are not.

Belle - GL Polish. the Polish are at their very ackward stage with their "do"s right now!

Collette - BC Marans. I'm really hoping that she isn't a roo. I see a comb and the bare start of waddles. But compared to pics of other BC Marans of her age, they are comparable. Fingers crossed.

Doc McCluckins - bossy BO

Esmeralda - SL Polish with the wild hair. She is definitely the lowest on the pecking order & quite skittish.

Flora - Blue Orp...another that I'm concerned might be a roo...hoping just a bossy main momma

Gizmo being prim & proper. These last 2 are CCL - **From a private breeder**

Gidget - another CCL from a private breeder; she's my flier

Pippa - didn't want to keep her head still! But her feather pattern is beautiful, so I wanted to share!

Is it Friday yet?? We are ready to ROCK AND ROLL!!!

Not pictured: Coco aka Charlie and Brownie - Buff Silkies from a private breeder...they were being obnoxious & trying to peck everytime I picked them up. Also not pictured: Poppy - GLW, she kept flying off & messing up each picture!

The coop is almost ready for everyone to be in it. The run will be ready by the end of the month & I'm having a coop warming party!!!
Too cute!

I love my 13 week old SS.. I survived a horrible 4 weeks thinking she was a mis sexed roo, but thankfully..no. Her comb sprung very early, but then it grew no further. I can clearly see she is a hen......Or at least I hope!

I had the same thing happen with my Barred Rock. At 3 weeks she had a pretty decent comb on her and was wild. But the comb stalled for awhile. She's now my head hen.

For what it's worth I don't think you need to worry about Collette or Flora. I know I had pointed out Collette's comb a week or two ago, but I think it would be bigger by now if she was a roo. Love that pic of Gizmo and Pippa's coloring! I desperately want a Spalsh BLRW but it's going to have to wait until we get more land. I'd like to get 3 BLRW girls and hope to get one of each variation and I'd also want a Blue Orp and SS in that order, focusing on cooler colors. I'm weird I know.

Pics? I feel like we haven't seen your girls in awhile.
So much to reply to I lost what I was going to say!

We have had numerous replacement orders with Meyer. I will not order from them again even though I like the birds that survive. It's just too hard to lose that many. I think it was because it was cold at night and I've read the altitude change can affect them also (we're at 6000ft+).
Oh gosh I don't blame you! I wouldn't order from any hatchery half way across the country, no matter how much I liked them. I saw on FB that MyPetChicken now has wheaten Favaucana's but I know that breeding program is separate from the chicks they drop ship from Meyer. Maybe one day I'll breed my own Favaucana's or get hatching eggs. I'd love both the blue and wheaten. I also want splash blue wheaten Ameraucanas and Marans. Again way down the road for us but one can dream.

Oh and yes I changed my profile pic ;)

My broody RIR seems to have snapped out of it! Woohoo! I removed every golfball from the nest boxes and I was only getting two eggs a day anyway, so she had nothing to sit on. She sat in an empty nest for a few hours, but seems to have given up. Thank God too because I can't imagine tending to the coop, the brooder, and the broody everyday. Phew!

In chick news, the wellie seems to have come around, but I lost the blue ameraucana. I might have a lead an a nearby breeder though! Ahh! I don't know if I can resist!
Plus credit for a spring order!!

I have one and so far she has not been broody. She is about a year and a half now. Sweetest hen.

Which, on the plus side could give them a longer life span. Could be good for grandkid pets....
Oh yeah, great for grand kids!

Your Polish are so adorable!! Just love them, like mini punk rockers!!

You'll have to share pics of the completed coop and warming party! Sounds like fun!

I love Polish! I can't wait for our SLP to molt. She burned half of her crest off this winter and her feathers are overall messy looking. Our D'Uccle is molting. Poor thing is nearly bald with no tail at all. At least she picked a good time of year! I'd like all the older girls to molt, then maybe it would cure the lice problem we keep battling.

Our little chicks are all doing well. So fun to have little ones around again. :)
So sorry to hear. I guess you need to get chicks that come from your area due to the altitude. Glad to hear your other ones are doing well.

A lavendar orpington sounds great. I may need to get more Orpingtons and some bantams since I have a grandchild due next year. That's all I need, another excuse for more chicks! I bet your grandson just loves them all!

So sorry about all your chick losses. Glad to hear that your broody is done, it is frustrating to have to take care of chicks and chickens in various locations.

I wish you lived closer and could take our noisy SF, she is the cutest thing but so loud!
Lol, if I lived closer and had more land, we live too close to our neighbors for me to knowingly take a noisy hen ;) Can I please see a pic of her though?

I thought it might be interesting to share on here, since we all have Meyer girls, who is the nosiest and quietest of your flock. You can share their name (if they have one) breed and approximate age and a story or picture if you wish. I'll go first.

Our noisiest is definitely Morgaine our Black Copper Marans. She and her sisters are 18 going on 19 weeks. She is at the top of the pecking order as far as we can tell and warns the other girls away from the treat ball and will complain that I need to give her more of any hand fed treats such as berries and greens. She sounds like a bird of death and I think sometimes pretends to crow. She'll hop on my back or shoulder and let out a "baw cawk!" to let everyone know she's on top. She is one of only two in the flock that have been singing "the egg song" but Baby the Buff Orp was the first to. Baby is talkative but her conversational voice is much lower in pitch and volume.

It's actually hard to pick a quietest three of our girls are very quiet, Victoria our Dorking says almost nothing at all, a couple times she has let out a honking sneeze. Clara will only cluck when I try to pet or pick her up and does so low and deeply and Amelia has the tiniest little voice that I adore, you have to be close to her little meeps though she has been trying to let out a louder call in the past few days (figuring out the egg song perhaps) but it sounds like she has a frog in her throat or something. Pretty hilarious.

LOL! I like the idea of sharing loudest vs quietest. I only have 3 girls who are not new babies.

Loudest:
Delaware named Kiwi. She's exactly 11 months old. She is definitely the top of the pecking order and has been since the beginning.

Quietest:
Buff Brahma, Apricot. Bottom of the pecking order. Rarely hear a sound from her. Very little when I'm coming with treats and I don't think I've ever heard an egg song from her.

We don't have any noisy hens. I guess our duccle, flower, has the noisiest egg song but other than that she's quiet. They cluck a little when treats come but nobody is loud.
Our quietest is our Cochin (lf), sterling, I never hear any noise from her except when she was broody. Then she would make this soft trilling noise when you disturbed her.

Getting local chicks site helps our survival rate (except for 4 polish we got local). Even if they are from a hatchery, I think only the strong ones are left by the time we pick them out.

A local homesteading group is getting chicks to sell. They have buff laced polish and a few other breeds I want. I would be a lot more tempted if they weren't straight run, but still tempting. Must resist!

I am going to try to convince dh to let me get may birds next week though. We were already discussing a space for them.

Ssh! DR and I are going to go look at a horse in the morning.

Thanks! That's what I was thinking too - if they were boys, then the combs and waddles would be really presenting themselves more each week. Not seeing more change! Fingers crossed and not counting my hens until I see eggs!!!
