I really hope all these new babies are girls. I can see combs on a bunch already. They're almost a week old. I'm getting nervous!

My feed store got them once this past spring but they were about a month before the other breeds I wanted so I didn't get them. Also called California Gray's but I'm sure you saw that in looking them up. They're on my want list for some day. Sounds like what you are looking for... calm white egg layer.Never heard of Production Blacks.. thought you meant Black sex links... but then I looked it up and I have to say it's interesting indeed. I use my BR crossed with my black Ameraucana roo to get some sex linked EE's but read that this breeds true, so perhaps I could be doing the same with those! They do seem a bit smaller than the larger breeds I own, but am looking for a calm white egg layer which seems to be the challenge. Thanks for the info!
Is that the Polish in your avatar? She is so cute!!My friend has a leghorn that is calm and I love my Polish. She lays smaller white eggs and is very calm even though we rarely held her as a chick. She always comes up to me to see if I have any treats and I can reach right out and pick her up. Plus I love their look.
uh-oh. post pics and maybe people here can help sexingI really hope all these new babies are girls. I can see combs on a bunch already. They're almost a week old. I'm getting nervous!
Yes... looked at a few sites, and most of them are sold out till next spring. Ideal had them and what they also call California White, which I think is like Meyer's Austra White. Has anyone here ever ordered from Ideal? I don't like they only have drawings of their birds. One thing I like about Meyer's website is that they are showing you examples from their breeding stock which I appreciate. My feed store got them once this past spring but they were about a month before the other breeds I wanted so I didn't get them. Here's our noisiest one, Sally the SF with her deep scratchy clucks and yells, she sounds like a old lady who smoked too much.Lol, if I lived closer and had more land, we live too close to our neighbors for me to knowingly take a noisy henCan I please see a pic of her though?
I thought it might be interesting to share on here, since we all have Meyer girls, who is the nosiest and quietest of your flock. You can share their name (if they have one) breed and approximate age and a story or picture if you wish. I'll go first.
Our noisiest is definitely Morgaine our Black Copper Marans. She and her sisters are 18 going on 19 weeks. She is at the top of the pecking order as far as we can tell and warns the other girls away from the treat ball and will complain that I need to give her more of any hand fed treats such as berries and greens. She sounds like a bird of death and I think sometimes pretends to crow. She'll hop on my back or shoulder and let out a "baw cawk!" to let everyone know she's on top. She is one of only two in the flock that have been singing "the egg song" but Baby the Buff Orp was the first to. Baby is talkative but her conversational voice is much lower in pitch and volume.
It's actually hard to pick a quietest three of our girls are very quiet, Victoria our Dorking says almost nothing at all, a couple times she has let out a honking sneeze. Clara will only cluck when I try to pet or pick her up and does so low and deeply and Amelia has the tiniest little voice that I adore, you have to be close to her little meeps though she has been trying to let out a louder call in the past few days (figuring out the egg song perhaps) but it sounds like she has a frog in her throat or something. Pretty hilarious.
They sure are cute chicks. The combs are not too big yet. Try to relax, if you can!Ok so I realize it is early, very early actually. But these girls are showing combs already! And really, don't we freak out waiting for the chicks? Freak out waiting to sex them? Freak out waiting for the first egg? Lol.
One week old Monday. My biggest culprits are:
Strawberry - speckled Sussex
(I know this breed scares a LOT of people)
Pumpkin - welsummer
Eggplant - Ameraucana
I will cry if this is another boy ameraucana.
Sarsaparilla - cuckoo marans
These are single comb breeds, except for the ameraucana so![]()
LOL. Sally looks like she's being noisy in that photo! Trying to stay calm about these chicks. Thanks!
Sounds like an old lady who smoked too much, ha! Oh Sally, yeah I'm not saying you're not beautiful in your own right because you are but the SF is just one breed I'll wait to get from a good breeder. Of course Deperella is a reddish hatchery SF and everyone loves Derp. Please tell me you all have heard of her, if not search for her on here, she and her human are fabulous. Christine, I don't think you have anything to worry about with the combs on those chicks. Especially the first two with the "wild" feather breeds like Speckled Sussex, Welsummer, Red and Silver Grey Dorkings, Cream Legbars and some Easter Eggers the girls tend to have the V's on the top of their heads, eyeliner and stripes on their back. Those girls have some nice arrows on their heads
this is the only one that looks like you should keep an eye on.Ok so I realize it is early, very early actually. But these girls are showing combs already! And really, don't we freak out waiting for the chicks? Freak out waiting to sex them? Freak out waiting for the first egg? Lol.
