can you remind me if your numbers again? How many birds and how long your batch of feed that you order from Azure lasts. Just ordered catalog and wnt to hit the Sept. Deliver as my date to start moving toward mixing own feed. I re-read your blog on website and wanted to thank you again, I found it very helpful.

Wow I suck at typing today, lol!

From your experience does that indicate laying soon? Her comb and waddle are very red now and both Roo's mating with her....
they all look like guilty children, lol pretty RIR Roo, how old? Did you get him from Meyer and what is his disposition like?

He is about six months old and from Meyers. He seems to good with people. My wife does not like him. But he has not tried anything with her. He is just a high energy bird with a neorvous personality. He is very good at taking care of the girls. I think he is great! I am going to have to rehome him tho.:-( I have to many projects and not enough space. So my reds have to go.

It can mean they are getting close but it can still be a couple weeks off. Others I've never heard do an egg song before they lay. Egg song, checking out the nest boxes, red wattles/comb, are all good signs it will happen soon.

I have 18 chickens on that feed right now. My daughter didn't shut the trash can all the way on accident one day and it blew off in a storm and soaked all the food so our numbers aren't accurate right now. It looks like right now I will go through the wheat and oats/barely every 1 1/2 months. Those cost ~$40 to replenish. The flax seed oil, kelp powder, peas, and lentils last for multiple batches so I should be able to get months out of them, guessing about 5-6 months.

I'm glad you found it helpful. :)

Moved the chicks out to the grow out pen today. They won't stay in it at night, just the days for now. The roosters were much more interested in the newcomers than the girls. It's the first chicks they've really seen since they were only a couple weeks older than our youngest.
Tried to take pics of the youngsters but they wouldn't sit still. I got a couple of the older ones too but am missing a couple (BA, PR, SLP, and cochin) because they were off free ranging, plus they don't change that much now. ;)

Apricot (BO) and Sadie (BLRW)

Fuzzy (bantam cochin)

Flower (D'Uccle) - she is currently molting. I'm hoping she loses some white. She didn't used to be this white.

Summer (Welsummer)

Dinner checking out the chicks

Gilfy (bantam EE)

Crystal and King - our silkies

Snowball (bantam cochin)

Amber (EE) - I hope she molts soon. She still looks like such a mess. You can see her scar on the wing. I'm just happy she's alive though. She's our sweetest bird. Tough too! For those that don't remember or weren't on here, she was attacked by something. I think a hawk but at the time we thought it was one of our dogs. She was torn up really bad. And of course DD and I were out of town when it happened and DH had to handle it. Luckily my friend came over to give him moral support and lend a helping hand. It was a long recovery but she did great.

Carter (BCM) - Isn't he growing up to be a handsome fellow!? He's got a little leakage on his chest but that's ok. Not bad for a mix. He's a great rooster too.

Now the littles...

Freckles (SS)

Sweetie (GLW?)

Blossom (EE) - Look at that green leg!

SLW - obviously a boy over night!

Granite and Peg (BR)

Clover (EE) in front - another roo and Blossom (EE) on the left

Here they all are.

OMG, I got my first egg tonight! I am over the moon being a proud chicken mom. My guess is it was the BR. Small weighed 3 grams, look light brown maybe almost a pinkish tint to it. Here she is pictured next to a store egg for reference.

Thanks again and glad to see that your homemade feed lasts that long. Love the girls and boys. Your roo's are both quite handsome! Glad to see Amber is doing so well.

we both liked Rojo one of the RIR Roo's as far as his looks, personality and instincts, however he was mean to the girls and aggressive with the other roosters so he had to go. Glad to see one is actually not what everyone says they are. Ours was nervous as well, didn't trust us at all would run the opposite direction if you headed his way.
