I have decided to separate Peppy from the group. He is a fine rooster, but apricot is having such a hard time with the mating process. Once she submits, she stays like that for so long that others come over and peck her. I though separating her would make reintroducing her worse, so I will separate him and see how it goes. I may have to rehome one of them which really stinks. I like them both so much. But I will do what I think is best. For now, peppy will go into the grow out area (which I had been using for storage) and we'll see how it goes.

Aww that would be a really hard decision, hopefully a little separation will change things and when he gets reintroduced he turns his attention to the others and gains confidence and keeps them in line to not pick on her.

Ha! Nice choices, I think you'll love the Dorking. What date did you choose? I need to talk to the husband when he gets home and decide on February or March and what breeds! I think we are going to be at three as well.

Oh gosh those Speckled Sussex chicks are just the cutest! And the Partridge Rocks are so gorgeous! Gah too many choices!

Okay what do you all think? I have so many breed collages on my computer but I think this is the most concise.
We have the Buffs, the first and second in the top row and I am considering getting a RIR.
We have the second and third (EE and Dorking) in the middle row and I'm almost positive I will get a Welsummer.
And we have the middle bottom, Black Copper Marans though she doesn't have the copper. Husband is leaning toward a Speckled Sussex and I'm debating about a Wyandotte. Could be splash, blue or black laced red or Silver Laced.

I don't think I can convince the husband to get four this year though so one has got to go.

I have a friend that might be easily talked into taking apricot, if need be. She was one of my firsts though so I'm keeping my fingers crossed everything works out.
I chose the week of May 5th. I think it will be warm enough for delivery but early enough that these three will be laying by the time everyone else is molting.

Just in case anyone is wondering, she got frostbite during a cold snap around the beginning of January, mainly because the coop had flooded shortly before then and I was having issues getting the excess moisture down as a result. :/ The other one with a huge comb, my Light Brown Leghorn, had no frostbite, so I'm not sure why Rangi had issues.

If it were me with those choices I would pick: Welsummer, SS, SLW, and BLRW. You need some black/white and blue/red in the mix.


Sorry for whoever asked how well my polish lays, I meant to answer and it didn't quote so I forgot. Ours laid pretty well this spring. I would say 4-5/week. I posted her monthly numbers somewhere on this thread. I'll see if I can find it.

Found my post with egg totals but she wasn't laying yet. I did find that she started laying at 36 weeks. I have read that polish are hit or miss with egg production though. My friend's polish rarely laid an egg while mine was very regular. I got her for looks more than eggs.

I think I'll make some warm oatmeal for the flocks tomorrow. They'll need it. Supposed to get down to -2 tonight.

A couple of our birds hadn't seen snow before this morning. Our CCL girl didn't want to touch the ground. She flew from the coop to the opposite side of the run and then back. She kept jumping and flying to wherever she wanted to be. lol I think they all hung out inside the coop after they got their food this morning. I'm going to feed them inside the coops tomorrow so they won't have to come out at all. Our high will only be 7 tomorrow!

Yikes... to cold too soon. I'm thinking my younger girls will be freaked out about the snow and stay in the coop. They are liking the big girls coop lately and hang out in there. I think they like all the activity of watching them laying eggs... as long as they stay out of the big girls way they don't seem to mind an audience.

Had to go away for a business trip and my daughter said that we got one white egg yesterday! Finally! It was Splash, our splash Blue Andulasion. She would wait until I left. That still means that we only had 2 eggs yesterday. Hopefully this means more are done molting too.

Finally.... and of course she waited until you left!! Hope you get more soon.

For me, I wouldn't go with an RIR... I think personality wise they can be so hit or miss. I had a horribly evil mean one I sold then heard through the grape vine she had to get rid of
her too she was so mean. My other one is fine. But nothing special. I would def. go with a BLRW or maybe a SLW? I don't think you have any black/white combo birds? SS, EE and Welsummer would be nice for both looking pretty and nice assorted egg color.

It didn't get above 0 here today. So much for 7deg! It's supposed to be -7 tonight with a wind chill of -10 to -25 tonight! Brrr!
Thinking maybe I should find a way to lock the horses into their stall. We don't have a door on it so I'm not sure how I'd do that but one already has ice crystals on it's back from staying outside all day. We don't have trees or other wind breaks on our property so the stall is their only option for cover. I put more hay in there to entice them in but they usually just eat and leave.


Ok, I noticed it was getting dark while typing this so I put the computer down and went out to see where they were and give them more hay. I think they were already in the stall because I didn't see them and it took them awhile to notice I was getting hay out. Usually they are right there waiting for me to load the wagon so they can eat out of it. I started moving towards the stall and they ran for it. They are both in there eating now so hopefully they'll stay. One didn't have any snow on her so I think she's figured out it's nicer in there. We'll see how they are in the morning.
I did a quick search on it and it said the temp horses are most comfortable in is 20-40deg. That is the temp their body doesn't have to work to heat or cool itself. It also says the temp they need intervention with shelter and/or extra food is -15! It said it takes 10-20 days for a horse to acclimate to colder weather. Too bad we only had 1 day! We've had a few cold spells prior to this but lots of nice warm weather in between. Our Tennessee Walker is bigger and has a much thicker coat of hair so I think he doesn't mind it as much but our Arabian is much smaller and I think she gets colder faster. I think that's why she is in the stall more often.

I checked on the outdoor kitty. I opened the door and he stuck his head out of his crate. I was glad to see him in there. That's where it is the warmest and comfiest for him. It is a small crate with a moving blanket and towel shoved in there near the 2 lights keeping things above freezing.

Ok so went out and the coop was -1 at like 3pm. So had to change the material on all the opening of the coop except the top vent. So of course it was the calamity of errors, wrong drill bit, the wood we had for coop window last year got used somewhere else, so had to round that up, I had to dig out plastic for part of a window and tack both inside the coop and outside. Boy was the gang unhappy with me climbing in the coop and staple gunning plastic on the upper windows, drilling a 2x4 into the ceiling and loudly hanging two infrared heat lamps. Of course they were happier with the outcome at lights out, meaning the run door gets closed, the temp was 4. So that is positive, now we are under a winter advisory overnight and windchill tomorrow am is expected to be -10 to -20. Definitely going to worry about the gang, but aside from brining them inside, which I am sure my bf and four dogs would object. Or maybe the dogs wouldn't . I have done all I can do for them today. They do have about 2 - 3 feet of deep bedding on the floor of the coop, roosts off the ground and insulated coop, so all should be fine. please tell me it will.....

On a positive we got 17/23 eggs today, I expect less tomorrow given today's scenario.
